Marco was mid-chewing when the woman started gesturing him towards the cage. His heart stopped for a moment, and he felt a little pale. For all he knew, she'd never let him out if he went in there, he didn't know if she was really as nice as she seemed. And cages in general were just a not very forest-hybrid sort of thing. He swallowed what was in his mouth, stared at her, then rapidly shook his head no.
-
The woman smiled gently, seeing his reluctance. "It's alright, as soon as the customers are gone you'll be let out." She promised. The little girl had run over to one side of the store, cooing at some young kitten hybrids.
-
Marco pursed his lips unsurely, but he was getting pretty itchy about a little girl running up to him at all. Reluctantly, he stood up, taking his blanket and cat food with him to shuffle towards the cage she'd gestured at. The one with firecracker dog, of course, who might give him a heart attack.
The father of the little girl was watching his daughter, while the mother was glancing around elsewhere. They were a wealthy couple, and while the kittens where interesting, she caught sight of a bushy-tailed thing that seemed to be a fox. She turned to the man that had welcomed them into the shop, pointing at the creature. "Is that a cat or a fox?" She asked, apparently clueless. -
"A fox," The man announced proudly. "But we only just found him this morning, the thing is sick, and not ready to be given a home." He explained. Lucas smiled at Marco as he came towards the cage. It was a simple sliding lock, Lucas probably could've gotten out if he'd wanted to, he just never saw a reason.
-
Marco looked down at the lock on the cage, finding that it was easy enough to open. He slid the lock, slipped into the cage, then locked it behind himself. Then, he looked at Lucas, shifting the balance on his feet again.
The mother huffed, biting the inside of her cheek. Her neighbors would probably be more impressed if they had a fox, instead of the cats that everyone else was buying. "When can we have him? We'll pay in advance, if that will work." -
Lucas smiled, although the grin faltered when he heard the woman. He shifted so that he was in front of Marco, silently trying to tell the woman that she couldn't have him. The man sighed and smiled. "We're not sure when he'll be healthy again, and he's an awfully skittish thing, bad for a pet." He cautioned. "We do have many other hybrids that are perfectly healthy though. Even a few bird-hybrids that just came in recently. No one else has one of those yet."
-
Marco was a little confused as to why Lucas had stepped in front of him, but he just ignored it, chuffing softly- a sound that he made by biting down on his bottom lip, then forcing air out of the corner of his mouth. It may have seemed a little abnormal, but his brother had always done it so he'd developed the same sort of habit. He took his cat food and blanket to the back wall of the cage, laying the blanket down, then laying down on it. The cat food he set a few feet away, deciding to save it for later.
The women nodded slowly, then said, "Sure. I'll see one of those," she decided, figuring that a bird would be even more interesting than a fox. -
Lucas let out a little huff of relief, worried that the woman might've taken Lucas. Having been separated from his own litter, and everyday wishing for a family of his own, he wanted Marco to see his brother again.
The man nodded and grinned, leading the woman off to another cage, talking animatedly about the hybrids' impressive wings. -
Marco curled up on the blanket, watching the humans who were wandering around the store, staring into cages. It all seemed very boring to Marco, who just laid there with his tail waving up and down. The little girl and her father were going to each cage, reaching in to pet behind ears and nab at tails. When they reached the cage Marco and Lucas were in, she forst was cooing at the dog hybrid, reaching both arms into the cage making grabby hands. "Doggy! I want a doggy!"
-
Lucas smiled and went over to the side of the cage, grinning and trying to look cute. His large tail wagged back and forth and he sat where she could reach him and grab at his ears. Some part of him wanted to stay. The shelter was the only home he'd ever known, and Marco had just made his life a whole lot more interesting. But at the same time, he'd been waiting to get adopted his entire life. Maybe this was it...
-
"Doggy doggy doggy doggy," the girl repeated over and over, wiggling her fingers to mess with Lucas' ears and mess up his hair. After a minute, she laughed, then got bored, and grabbed one of his ears. "I wanna name her Princess!" She declared of the hybrid, grinning like it was her proudest achievement.
Marco raised an eyebrow at the girl, as she didn't seem to understand the concept of personal space, or names. -
Lucas laughed and wiggled his ears, his tail wagging a mile a minute. He loved kids, he always had. "Hm...how about Prince?" He suggested to the child, smiling. He didn't usually speak to the customers, it wasn't exactly encouraged, but he liked the younger customers, and it was fun to have ridiculous little conversations with them.
-
Marco stared at the interaction, wondering how a hyrbid could actually want to be owned by a human family. The little girl shook her head, wrinkling her nose. "No, I like Princess. And we can watch the Cinderella movie together, and when I watch it I always dress up like a princess so you can wear one of my dress-ups too." She looked around him, letting go of the dog with one hand to wave at Marco. "Kitty! I want a kitty, too!" She exclaimed, while Marco frowned and chuffed at her inability to recognize that he wasn't a cat.
-
"Ooh, that sounds fun," Lucas replied, sure that the little girl wouldn't detect the sarcasm in his voice. When she pointed at Marco, Lucas laughed again. "Not a kitty, a fox," He explained. He gave Marco a pleading smile and gestured for him to come over and say hello.
-
Marco didn't like the idea of approachin the girl, so he gave her a moment to ponder the idea of him not being a cat. She stared blankly at him for a second, like she didn't understand, but then she nodded and said, "Yeah, a fox, that's what I said, I wanna fox," she kept waving at Marco, so he sighed, crawling over to kneel next to Lucas. He kept a foot back, though, out of her reach. She frowned, "Daddy, the kitt- the fox doesn't like me."
