He raised his eyebrows, giving her a questioning look. "Are you sure? We've been friends since kindergarten, Jen. I can tell when you're lying."
-
She shrugged. "Just trying to figure out what to draw, that's all."
-
"Hm... How about the sunset? You seemed to really enjoy it," Chris suggested. He pressed the end of the pencil against his lips, deep in thought.
-
She smiled. "Yeah...Thanks." She picked up a pencil.
-
Christopher smiled back, his eyes sparkling. "Happy to help." He shifted his focus back to his drawing, continuing to add details in little waves throughout the page.
-
She started drawing the sunset she had seen last night.
-
He started shading in the smallest details, the subtle shadows and areas of lightness. After putting the finishing touches he signed his initials at he bottom in his erratic manuscript. Next, Christopher started formulating his explanation in his mind. I drew Heaven. I'll be going there soon.
-
She didn't think much of her drawing, almost as though she was putting her exact memory of the sunset onto the paper.
-
Class would be ending in about twenty minutes, just enough time to get through about all of the presentations. The art teacher called time and let the discussion be open, accepting volunteers first.
-
Jenifer finished just in time, leaning back slightly in her chair and looked around the room.
-
A few students volunteered to explain their pieces. They all had ties to the past or vacations they had taken. There was a moment of silence in the room, as if fate was looking for its next presenter.
"I'll go," Christopher said quietly, standing up. He held his drawing in front of him as he spoke.
"I chose to draw the gates of Heaven. I did this for two reasons, reasons that are very personal to me. My father died when I was about three months old. He was in a war overseas. He was selfless and utterly pure. He now resides behind these gates, safe in the hands of God." He took a shaky breath, steadying himself before continuing.
"I was diagnosed with leukemia when I was six years old. I've been fighting the disease for just about ten years now. It went into remission about a year ago, which is why I was here in 10th grade. That summer, it came back. The doctors tried everything to ward it off, but nothing has worked up until now. Heaven... I'll be seeing my father very soon." With that, he took his seat once more. The room remained silent, hushed by the shock and sadness now lingering in the air. -
Jenifer looked at Chris, sadness in her eyes once again reminded that he would be leaving her soon.
-
Chris bowed his head, ashamed for causing such sadness. I'm sorry... I'm sorry...
Ms. Fischer cleared her throat. Her eyes were tearing up. She blinked back the tears. "Would anyone else like to share?" she asked, her voice that was once cheery and loud now quiet and sad. -
Jenifer bit her lip, blinking back some tears. She quietly grasped his hand under the table.
-
Chris felt Jenifer hold his hand. He glanced up at her sadly. Leaving you will be the hardest thing I'll ever have to do...
