Okay... So, here's my first idea.
Two people have been friends ever since kindergarten. At the age of seven, the boy gets diagnosed with leukemia. Every day for the remainder of his life he writes letters to God, only never once does he pray for himself. Now at the age of sixteen, he is slowly dying. The chemo and blood transfusions have ceased to work. Let the story unfold from there. I'd like it to start with a flashback from their childhood, then jump to the present?
For this idea, I recommend you listen to this song. It describes the mood of the story. Not only is it beautiful, but it is heartbreaking and warming at the same time.

Other: Pretty much stated in the general plot. Artistic. Spends most of his time while on treatments sketching various landscapes. He draws heaven. Writes letters to God for others, while facing his own fate head on. Knows that God intends for him to leave, for he is needed elsewhere.
Younger self looks the same, only smaller and younger. xD If that isn't obvious.
