Chris looked up from his sketchbook. "Come in," he said, watching as the doorknob turned. He finished up his sketch and set the notebook aside.
-
Jenifer opened the door slightly, before slipping in and closing the door. "Here's your work." She said, setting down the work on his desk."
-
"Thanks, Jenny." He smiled at her, his bright blue eyes holding that same hope they had the day he had informed her of his illness. It had gone into remission for the past months. It was only about a week ago when the disease had started to show up once more.
-
She smiled back. "No problem." She sat down on his bed.
-
"How've you been?" his voice was quiet, there was a small whispery aspect to it. He was thin and a bit pale, but still possessed high spirits.
-
Jenifer shrugged. "Same old, same old." She whispered, remembering the acts of what happened this morning.
-
"Are you sure? Something tells me there's more to it." He eyed his friend, knowing something was going on. She had that look on her face, not quite sad, but not quite happy either.
-
She sighed. "My mother...h-hit me..again..." Jenifer looked down.
-
Chris frowned, taking his friend's hand in his. "You're always welcome to stay here. You don't deserve that cruelty."
-
Jenifer shook her head. "Mother won't allow it. She wants me to stay at home, because she's apparently 'afraid I'll be drunk' when I'm out past 8 pm." She said bitterly.
-
"Yet she's hitting you. Why? What makes her do that? You're amazing, if anything she should be incredibly proud of you."
-
She blushed a bit. "How should I know? It might have something to do with my father's death...she blamed me for it, after all." Her voice went quiet.
-
"And how could she blame you? You had nothing to do with it." He was genuinely angry with her mother. "Would a sick person yelling at her fix anything?"
-
Jenifer shrugged once again. "She said 'Your father never would have died if you were born!' That's her only reason, apparently giving her a right to hit me..." She started to get teary.
-
Christopher shook his head, pulling Jenifer into a gentle hug. "She's angry that your father is gone. She actually blames herself, but she takes it out on you. You don't have to tell her you're staying here. She won't have to know."
