"Don't we all have enough to deal with?" They reached the front courtyard of the school. Already there was a buzz about him. It seemed as though all of their eyes bore into every inch of his body.
"That's him. That's the leukemia kid," a girl whispered, pointing slightly.
"Do you think he's cured?" another asked in a hushed whisper.
"He looks terrible." Christopher tried to ignore the conversations he could so clearly hear. -
"Ignore them." Jenifer hissed quietly.
-
Christopher nodded slightly. "I'll try," he whispered back.
"Christopher... I never thought we'd be seeing your face again," a snobby voice rang out behind them. Veronica. He did as he was told and kept walking. The girl only became more persistent.
"Are you really that sick that you can't say a simple hello? Earth to Christopher, hello? Anyone in there?" -
Jenifer glared at Veronica, before opening the door and entering the school.
-
"Come on! I'm just trying to be nice!" She called before the door shut.
"Sure you are," Christopher mumbled to no one in particular. -
Jenifer sighed. "She's still a bitch.." She muttered to him once they were safely away from the door.
-
"Not a doubt in my mind," he replied. "Do I still have my old locker, or have those changed too?" He looked around the hallway. It was just as it was a year ago. Noisy with the voices of students and the slamming of locker doors.
-
"I think you still do.." She replied.
-
"Okay. I'll try that one and go from there." He walked over to a locker next to the water fountain and racked his mind for the combination. "Thirty-six, twenty-two, thirty-seven..." he murmured as he dialed in the combination. The locker swung open, revealing a shelf of neatly organized books, untouched since the day he left.
-
She smiled. It wasn't so lonely at school anymore with him there.
-
He knelt down slowly, looking through the binders. "Oops. I have some old assignments I never turned in." He laughed to himself.
-
She grinned. "Oh well." She said, shrugging.
-
"Which class is first?" he asked, standing up.
-
"Art." She said happily, it was her favorite subject.
-
Christopher beamed. "The perfect way to start the day." He was genuinely happy, especially happy to spend the whole day with Jenifer.
