A wave of nausea ran through him, pushing the dizziness farther. He winced, doubling over. Vomit rose from his stomach, spilling out of his mouth and onto the tile floor. Christopher shook with the force of it, his hands shaking. Blood stained his lips, obviously from the upchuck. He knew the signs of intensifying leukemia. He panicked, his eyes wide as he crumbled to the floor.
-
Jenifer ran over to him. "Christopher!" She said. Putting a gentle hand on his shoulder.
-
His whole body shook as he threw up again, this time almost entirely blood. He coughed, almost choking on his own vomit. "Get them... call..." He was thrown off guard by yet another round of throwing up.
-
Jenifer nodded hurriedly. "Alright." She said, running off down the hall, towards the nearest room.
-
His breathing was heavy, a few drops of blood sliding slowly down his chin and neck. His eyes were wide with terror as his body convulsed once more, pure blood flowing out of his mouth. His whole frame ached, burned...
-
She ran into the art room. Where, thankfully, the art teacher was there. "Come quick!" She said. "It's Chris, he's...he's." She didn't finish.
The art teacher looked up at Jenifer, her eyes wide. "Show me to him." She said.
Jenifer nodded and ran out of the room. -
He knew the leukemia was taking over now. It had been like this before, but never this bad; never this horrible and petrifying. He heard hurried footsteps coming down the hall. His whole body shuddered, an involuntary motion after throwing up so much. His mouth tasted metallic; it tasted of blood.
-
The art teacher quickly pulled out her cell phone and called 911 the second she saw Chris.
Jenifer looked worried at her dear friend. -
His heart thumped steadily in his chest, though at a quickening pace. It was his only reassurance that he was in fact still alive, still aware.
The paramedics arrived shortly after, loading Christopher onto a gurney. They carried him quickly outside and put him into the ambulance. "Do you know him?" they asked Jenifer. -
Jenifer nodded. "He's my friend." She said through her tears.
-
"Come with us. Patients under 18 need to be accompanied by a trusted individual." He guided her to the back of the ambulance and helped her up. "Sit on that bench and buckle your seat belt."
-
She nodded and did what she was told.
-
The paramedic climbed into the back as well, shutting the door behind him. He immediately hooked Christopher up to an IV and an oxygen system. "What's his name?" he asked, not turning away from the patient.
-
"Christopher." She said quietly, looking her friend.
-
"Christopher, can you hear me, bud? We're going to the hospital. If you can hear me, look me in the eyes." The boy on the gurney stared blankly up at the man. His breathing was raspy and broken.
"Jenifer.." he barely whispered, as if calling for someone.
The man turned to the girl sitting across from him. "Are you Jenifer?"
