He offered her a weak smile. Here, with Jenifer, Christopher felt safe, immune to all the threats life has thrown his way.

She smiled back. "I'm going to miss you, a lot."

The bittersweet moment caused his heart to ache with sadness and longing. "I'll miss you too... But I'll always be here. You just won't see me..."

She bit her lip sadly. "I...I know."

He shrugged. "Kind of like a guardian angel, I guess. Or a ninja. Either one works." He smiled sadly.

She grinned a bit.

"So, at night, when you smell chocolate and mint, that'll be me, eating a peppermint patty. I really like those things." He smiled at her, happy to put a lighter mood on the table.

She laughed a bit. "I know you do."

His smile grew wider. "Sometimes, when I'm feeling daring, I make milkshakes with them. That way I can take my pills while tasting the minty goodness."

She giggled a bit. "Daredevil, you." She said jokingly.

"It is, isn't it... It relieves stress and makes everything lighter." This was what he lived for, these small conversations with Jenifer that made him feel like he was invincible, that nothing could possibly blight his day.

A nurse walked into the room and handed him a bottle of water. "Try to drink something, hon."
