"Yeah, I forgot that you were coming home soon," Akira said, not fully sure what to do in this awkward silence.

Maddy saw the looks exchanged between Akira and Jade. "Well, it's getting dark. I should be heading home. My mom's probably wondering where I am. I'll see you tomorrow?" Maddy picked up her book bag and slung it over her shoulder. -

"Okie, bye Maddy," Akira replied and gathered his backpack as well. "Ready to go home, sis?" -
"Bye," Maddy replied, "It was nice meeting you, Jade." Maddy turned and headed down the path heading to the left. She couldn't help but smile. She reached the front door and pulled it open. "Mom, I'm home!" she called. No answer. Maddy slammed her book bag down next to the front door and headed to the kitchen to fix herself some dinner.

She rummaged through the cabinets and settled on some leftover mac and cheese. As she ate, she was thinking about what Akira had said about peace and balance. She would never have that in her life as long as her uncle lived with her.

Akira walked how with Jade, and realized his dad hadn't arrived back from work yet. So he decided to make dinner for them both. -

Maddy grabbed some eggs and made herself an omelet. She sat down at the table and wondered where her mother was. She was probably working overtime, seeing as they needed the extra money. Paying bills was getting harder and harder each month. -

Suddenly dad came home, groaning and mumbling angry to himself. Akira finished making pasta and made it available for His dad and sister to eat. As his dad walked in, he tried to make conversation. "How was school?" "Fine," Akira said causally. "Get beat up again today?" "....more like attacked." "When are you going to learn to attack back, son?" "They're trying to make me mad so I'll get suspended again." "I'd rather have a son that fights and gets in trouble than a p---- one that makes great spaghetti." Ouch. It was silent after that and Akira just said, "I got to do homework." and left to his room. -
Maddy placed her plate in the sink and headed up to her room. She started on her algebra homework, but couldn't focus. She grabbed her phone and texted Akira. hey, srry 2 bug u. cant think straight rnow

Jade glared at her father and went to go see if Akira was okay. She went down the hall and knocked on his door.
"Akira?" she said before opening the door. He was sitting on his bed. She noticed his knuckles were beat-red and there was a new hole in the wall behind the door. "Yeah. This isn't a great time right now Jadie," he replied, staring down at his hand. -

Akira looked down, feeling bad that his sister had to see him like this. "I'm sorry Jadie," he said, and used a ripped off part of his white tshirt to cover his hand. He pulled out his cell from his jean pocket and saw Maddy's text. It's fine, I can't think right now either -
Maddy frowned and replied. what happened? u ok? She was worried.
