“I’m fine,” Evan whispered, sliding down the door.

Connor exhaled shakily and set the gift basket down on the floor, backing away from the door a little. He opened his mouth to speak but couldn't find anything to say, turning and walking off. Maybe- maybe he just needs space-

Tears formed in Evan’s eyes and he started to cry. “Why are you leaving so soon?” Evan’s dad called to Connor from the kitchen.

"I uhm- Something's come up, so I've- I've got to go-" Connor said, a nervous look on his face. "It was nice seeing you, though," he spoke softly, walking off and heading out to his car.

“Wha- Connor? No-“ Evan’s dad tried to catch him, heading towards the front door.

"I- I'm sorry, I- I've got to go," Connor spoke shakily, trying to keep calm as he pulled out his keys and unlocked his car door.

“What? Connor, stop, what’s going on?” Evan’s dad said, awkwardly jogging after him.

"Nothing, I just- I don't think Evan wants to see me right now," Connor spoke, his voice wavering a little. "I- I've really got to go, I'm sorry-" He added, climbing into his car.

“No- what? Why doesn’t Evan want to see you? He’s been talking about you all week when he’s not in his room-“ Evan’s Dad frowned, putting a hand on Connor’s car to stop him from leaving.

"Please, I- I really have to go," Connor spoke shakily, his hands trembling as he gripped the steering wheel in his hands.

Evan froze, a sob escaping his lips. “Why- why are you still here? I’m fine, I don’t want you to-“ he paused, remember his dad was there.
“Evan, you’re not sick, tell him the truth.” -
"I- I want to know what's going on, why- why are you pushing me away?" Connor spoke, raising his voice a little.

“What? I- I’m not-“ Evan said, trying to wipe his tears away as quickly as he could. “Evan, open the door and talk to Connor like an adult, please-“

"You kind of are, yeah-" Connor spoke, uncrossing his arms. "Please, can we just- can we talk? I'm always here to listen, you know that."
