Hazel hesitated, then took his hand.

Max pulled him up gently, walking her to the bathroom. Once Theo and Layla were out of earshot he sighed. "I think I know why you're upset." He mumbled.

Hazel looked down. ‘And why’s that?’ she mumbled.

"Well, you keep getting really upset whenever Theo and Layla do anything, and he told us you guys were together. I know how to connect the dots." He leaned against the wall. "I just want you to know that I'm here for you, ok? It can't be easy being in that position."

Hazel looked up at him, giving a weak smile. ‘It’s that obvious?’ she said in a quiet voice.

"Well, it is for the people paying attention." Max shrugged. He wanted to say something about him paying attention to her because he was into her, but knew it wasn't the right time.

Hazel sighed, glancing back to wear Layla and Theo were cuddling. She clenched her jaw and looked back at Max. ‘I don’t think Layla likes me, anyway.’

"Oh, definitely not." Max shook his head. "Don't believe a word she says about you though. She'll try to get in your head."

‘Ugh, figures,’ Hazel mumbled, looking at Layla. Why did Theo’s new girlfriend had to be so sweet and pretty? She could never compete with that.

Max nodded. "Yeah. She's a bit of a diva. Don't tell her I said that, though."

Hazel laughed quietly. ‘A diva?’

"Yeah. Is that the right word?" He paused for a moment, looking like he was flipping through a mental checklist. "Point is, she can be a brat. Talk to me if she says anything unhinged."

Hazel gave a smile. ‘Thanks, Max,’ she said quietly, fiddling with her hands.

Max smiled. "You're welcome."

Hazel smiled up at him for a moment before walking into the bathroom
