Maeve went silent. She knew he was right, but she didn't want to think about him dying.

Chester exhaled sharply. ‘You just- You can at least try, okay? I’m getting your teachers to send a note to me every time you skip. Once you start actually passing, I’ll keep letting you occasionally skip with Lavender.’ He tried to phrase it like Maeve didn’t have a choice and he would actually punish her if she did skip.

Maeve still didn't say anything, sinking down to the floor.

Chester sighed. He watched her for a moment and sat down next to her, crossing his legs.

Maeve held her legs close to her chest and buried her head in her hands.

Chester grabbed out his pocket watch, swinging it back and forth. ‘What’s going on, Maeve?’

"Nothing."

‘Something is. Tell me, I won’t get mad.’

"What'll you do if I can't get my grades up?"

‘I… I don’t know yet.’

That didn't scare Maeve at all. "Oh. Okay."

‘It’s not like I can ground you. You’d just teleport away. What, do you have any ideas for potential punishments?’

"No." Maeve said quickly, shaking her head.

‘Right.’ Chester was quiet for a few moments. ‘Why do you suddenly not care? You were a great student last year.’
