Collins nodded, holding her knees to her chest. 'That makes sense,' she said. 'You don't deserve that, obviously. I wish there was a way you could live normally.'
-
"I never will. I'm just a freak no matter how nice I am." Florence said. He smiled. It didn't matter what he did because he never would be normal and no one would accept that. He was always painfully aware of it but he never liked to express it. He liked to attempt not to.
-
'I... I suppose thats true,' Collins looked at him sympathetically. She couldn't imagine what it must've been like.
-
"it's okay. I'll be able to live peacefully once this place is normal again. I'll see people regularly, maybe they'll even let you join the junior researchers." Florence said
-
It was a nice thought. If only the creator would return. ‘Maybe,’ Collins said.
-
"it has more benefits than going to a facility. I like my windows and I liked interacting with people. Sometimes I was even able to go outside when it was late at night." Florence said. His wings rose as he remembered the orange in his hand.
-
Collins nodded. ‘Fair enough. Have you ever considered leaving the hospital, though? Maybe flying to a really unpopulated spot in the forest and living there? You could probably make some human friends, and I could visit you. There are fruit trees in the forest too.’
-
"I would but..." Florence said, hesitating. He'd thought of leaving. It was on his mind a lot more than he thought, but there was one issue. "Then I'd be abandoning everyone here." Florence said.
-
Collins was silent for a moment. ‘You don’t want to leave them, do you?’ she asked. ‘But if they’re all like Riley, we can’t take them outside. They could scare people and get you all captured.’
-
"I know. That's why I can't leave. Some of them could miss me, then they'll go out looking for me, then others will go look, at that point it's all scary. What if they feel betrayed? Then they'll be hurt." Florence said. Maybe he was overthinking it, but it scared him. He didn't want to hurt their feelings. They were intelligent non humans like him.
-
Collins nodded, exhaling softly. ‘That’s fair. But none of you can spend the rest of your life like this,’ she said quietly.
-
"what else are we supposed to do?" Florence asked. His wings drooped again. He mimicked a sad trumpet.
-
‘I… I don’t know. Perhaps we can get the authorities involved. Find where John is and tell the police everything, then sue Obsidian for conducting experiments on people without their permission or something. Maybe we can find you guys homes or a better place to stay,’ Collins said, thinking aloud.
-
"would that really work? Would I be allowed to go outside?" Florence asked. He mimicked a blue jay call
-
‘I don’t know. It could backfire and Obsidian could come up with a lie or excuse. People would be more likely to believe a mean old man than a teenage girl and a Florence,’ Collins said, sighing. ‘Or you guys would be put in facilities and experimented on. Then it could get worse and all this,’ she gestured to the space around them, ‘could just repeat.’
