‘Fair enough. That’s a good idea,’ Collins said. She leaned back against the wall.

Florence almost went to go sit beside Collins, but then he remembered what was behind him. The memories of what happened behind him. The acrid smell of burning skin and the knowledge that the assistant researcher would keep you there until he decided whatever little thing you did was forgiven. Questioning why you were in trouble in the first place. Florence sat back down, facing away from the pit and fiddling with his feathers.

Collins frowned. She shuffled forward so she was sitting next to Florence. ‘Are you okay?’ she asked.

"fine. Fine. Don't like it here. It's fine. It's just the pit. It's fine if I don't look at it." Florence said. Looking at the pit made him remember the pit. Florence did not want to remember. He tugged at a small feather on his lower wing.

Collin’s brows furrowed. She shuffled closer to him and grabbed out a piece of fruit. ‘Are you hungry? Will a mandarin help you feel better?’

"ooo I love oranges!" Florence shouted. His wings shot up in his joy.

Collins smiled and handed him the mandarin. She glanced back towards the pit, then Florence.

Florence bit into the orange like it was an apple and then peeled it. He started to lightly flap his wings while he mimicked an apple crunch

Collins was glad he’d seemed to relax. She crossed her legs. ‘Feeling better?

"kind of. Everything's okay when I'm not thinking about it." Florence said.

‘So I guess talking about it would make you feel worse?’ Collins asked.

"no, I can talk about it. As long as I'm sure he's not listening." Florence said

'Who?' Collins asked. 'The assistant researcher?'

"yeah. Any of his friends too. They're everywhere.. except the secret room." Florence said

‘They’re not here. We’re completely alone,’ Collins said, resting her head on her hands. ‘Do you think talking about it will make you feel better?’
