“It’s just me and my parents.” Nikolai said, staring at the floor. “I used to have an older brother, but I haven’t seen him
In years. We live in a tiny house, more like a shed if I’m being honest, and all my parents do is argue with eachother….” He looked at her in embarrassment. “Sorry. That was a bit too much information. You probably didn’t want to hear any of that.” -
Natsuki gave him a small smile and shook her head. She appreciated that he was able to tell him more about his family when she had told him about hers. She took another bite of her biscuit and tilted her head at him again with a smile.
-
Nikolai gave a small smile back, and finished his biscuit. “I-I’m… thanks” he said, not knowing what else to say.
-
Nat finished her biscuit and wiped her hands on her school dress, thinking about what to do next. She decided to show Nik to her room, and gestured for him to follow her.
-
Nil followed Natsuki over to her room, and once they were there, he sat on the floor.
“Nice room.”
He said, grinning. -
Nat smiled, sitting down on her bed. Her room was about average size, with stuff everywhere. There was a bookshelf in the corner crammed with books and DVDs, a violin under her bed and a wardrobe against the wall. Her covers were black with white patterning and there was a window with dark blue curtains.
She fiddled with her hands, unsure of what to do next. -
“You play the violin?” Nikolai asked, pointing at the violin under her bed. “That’s awesome!” He looked at the DVDs on her bookshelf. “And you have the first Star Wars movie?”
-
Nat smiled and nodded with a small chuckle. She pulled out the violin and bow from under her bed and set it on the covers, then stared at it for a moment. She glanced back at Nik.
-
“Do you want to play a song?” Nikolai asked. “You don’t have to…”
-
Nat stared at him for a moment. Nobody had shown this much interest in her before, apart from Xiao and Ming, of course. After a pause, she nodded, holding the violin up to her neck and resting her chin on the thingamajig and held the bow up to the strings, hovering it above them for a moment.
After another seemingly long pause, she closed her eyes and began to play. -
Nikolai listened to her play the violin. It sounded better than anything he had listened to before, and much better than the kids that played at the school assemblies.
When she stopped he looked at her in awe.
“That was… amazing!” He said, grinning up at her. -
Nat's cheeks flushed bright red as she sat back down, this time on the floor next to Nik, setting the violin down back under her bed. She smiled at him gratefully.
-
“I’ve never heard anyone play an instrument that well,” Nikolai admitted, leaning into her slightly. “How long did it take you to learn how to play like that?”
-
Natsuki's smile grew wider, as she leaned into him as well. She obviously didn't reply, though.
-
Nikolai smiled, and then broke the silence.
“Can we practice ASL right now?” He asked. “Er- maybe not right now, but soon? Unless you don’t want to today, then we can do it later…”
