Natsuki forced a smile and nodded. She put her lunchbox in her bag and hurried off, eager to leave the conversation. Now another kid knew she was mute.

Nikolai walked into his next class, social studies, which wasn’t that far away, face still burning from the embarrassment. Why would he ask her such a personal and probably embarrassing and awkward question?!

Nat's next class was Social Studies, which was quite interesting, so she knew it would help take her mind off things. She went the long way because she'd taken a wrong turn at some point, so she found herself being a little late. She walked into the classroom and sat at the back.

Nikolai’s class was studying for a test that was the next week, when the door opened. He looked up from his paper, and saw Nat walk through the door.

'Tardy,' the teacher said to Nat, looking up from his paperwork. Natsuki nodded apologetically and sat down, pulling out her work and setting it on her desk.

Nikolai turned around to look at Nat. She was in his class? How stupid was he to not have noticed?!

Natsuki pulled out a pencil and started working through the prep. The actual facts taught in Social Studies was quite interesting to her, but the tests were long and tedious. The prep was even worse.

Nikolai turned back to face his desk and his tests prep. Ugh, how was he supposed to pay attention?

After around 10 minutes, Natsuki was done. She looked around her at the other kids, who were still working. 'Finished, Miss Chong?' Mr. Thomson asked her. Natsuki nodded sheepishly, making the teacher smile. 'And that, children, is the result of actually paying attention,' the teacher said, aiming it specifically at the people who were talking.
Nat sat back and stared out the window. -
Nikolai stared his paper down, as if he could make it do itself. It didn’t, obviously, and all it did was frustrate him and stress him out.

Nat glanced around the classroom, growing more and more bored by the minute. She rested her head on her desk and pulled out her phone to check the time. 5 minutes left, thank god.

Nik FINALLY got his paper done just as the bell rang. Everyone was packing up and leaving, and he walked up to Nat. -
Natsuki chucked her stuff in her bag, and slung it over her shoulder. She stood and noticed the boy from before in front of her, and she gave him a small smile.

Nikolai smiled back, trying to think of something to say.
“I didn’t know you were in my class,” he said, not knowing what else to do or say.
