“I’m not bothering you?” Nikolai said in disbelief, taking another bite of his apple. “Really?”

Natsuki shook her head again, putting the crusts back in her lunchbox and pulling out a muesili bar. She unwrapped it slowly.

“Well that’s awesome,” Nikolai said, still in disbelief. Most people couldn’t stand him.
“Am I talking to much?” He asked. “I’m probably talking too much. Everyone says I talk too much…” he trailed off, not knowing how to end his sentence. -
Natsuki smiled in an almost-chuckle and shook her head. She quite liked his rambling.

Nikolai grinned and finished his apple. He looked at his lunchbox to see if there was anything else he could eat. There wasn’t anything else.

Natsuki noticed him looking at him empty lunchbox. She reached into her own and pulled out three crackers and passed them to him. Her brother always packed too much for her.

Nikolai’s smile was even bigger now.
“Thanks.” He said “you didn’t have to do that y’know.” -
Nat shrugged, in a 'I wanted to' way. She grinned and took a bite from her muesili bar.

Nikolai ate the crackers she gave to him, and by the time he was done, the bell for the end of lunch rang.

Natsuki packed up her stuff and stood up. She hadn't stopped smiling that entire lunch break, which was more than she could say for the past few days.

Nikolai packed up and followed her “Wait, you never told me your name!” He called out.

Nat turned around to face him. She chewed her bottom lip and pulled out her phone, opening the notes app. She wrote her name in a big font and held it out for him to see.

“Natsuki?” Nikolai said, wondering if he pronounced it wrong, and then realized why she might’ve used notes instead of just saying her name. “Wait- can you not talk?”

Natsuki glanced down at the floor, refusing to look him in the eye and shook her head. She wasn't sure why she was ashamed, she just was.

“Oh, I guess I just assumed-“ Nikolai said, blushing in embarrassment. “ Well, I have to go to class.”
