Natsuki nodded and stood up, wiping her eyes furiously. She returned the shoebox under Xiao's bed after putting the funeral picture in her pocket, then looked back to Nik.
-
Nik looked at Natsuki. “Hey, the photo of your extended family, it seemed like a big family. How’d you end up with Xiao, and not anyone else in your family?” He asked.
-
Natsuki pulled the photo out of her pocket and showed Nik the back of it, where it was written in cursive writing, "25th December - In China for a family gathering ", trying to show him the rest of her family lived in China.
-
Nikolai looked at the cursive writing. “Oh, ok.” He said. “Makes sense.”
-
Natsuki nodded and left Xiao's room, heading down the hallway to her sister's.
-
They both walked into Ming’s room, and Nikolai looked around.
“Her rooms so cute.” He said, smiling. -
(Gotta go, sorry)
-
Natsuki smiled and nodded, glancing around. Her room was crowded with stuffed toys her many relatives had given when she was born. There were several terrible drawings on the walls and her covers were pastel yellow and green.
Ming didn't have a shoe box yet, so Natsuki instead took a look inside the wardrobe. -
(dang it 😭)
-
Nikolai sat down on the floor, looking at an adorable stuffed bear on Ming’s bed. He grabbed it gently, and it was super soft.
-
Inside Ming's wardrobe there were quite a few tiny clothes and a creepy Chinese doll gifted to her by her Great-Aunt.
-
Nikolai looked at Natsuki and the wardrobe she was looking at. “Geez, that’s a weird doll.” He said.
-
Natsuki nodded and stood on her tiptoes to look at the top shelf, and found a whole bunch of drawings. She looked over them and found one that sparked her interest.
It was a drawing of the family, each person labelled with their name. Xiao's name was spelt wrong, though, and Nat could barely read the word 'mummy'. -
Nikolai stood up, still holding the stuffed bear.
“What’d you find?” He asked curiously, walking up to her. -
Natsuki held out the drawing, not looking up. She was smiling, but tears were still in her eyes.
