“What’s that symbol supposed to mean?” Nikolai asked.

'Chong,' Natsuki whispered, holding it up. 'My father's surname.' She picked up another rock with a different symbol painted on it. 'And this one, Wu. My mother's.'

Nikolai smiled, looking at the other stuff in the shoebox. “That’s so cool.” He whispered.

Natsuki smiled and tucked the stones in her pocket, before looking at a few of the other photos. One that had been taken a few years ago, just after Ming was born. It was a family photo and had been taken with the whole family, all Nat's uncles and aunts and cousins and grandparents. -
Nikolai looked at the photo Natsuki was looking at. “That’s a big family.” He said.

Natsuki nodded with a slight chuckle, and returned the photo to the shoebox. She rummaged around carefully for anything else that sparked her interest. -
Nikolai watched Nat go through the shoebox, waiting for her to either stop or find something that sparked her interest.

Nat then found a photo that brought tears to her eyes. It was a photo that had been taken at her parent's funeral, before the foster care started looking for them. Xiao, Nat and Ming were dressed in black clothing. Ming wasn't sure what was going on, but she'd noticed Xiao and Nat's expressions and was trying to cheer them up.

Nikolai saw Nats expression, and immediately hugged her.
“It’s ok.” He told her. -
Natsuki leaned into Nik, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. She let out a shaky breath, her hands shaking slightly with the photo in them.

Nik grabbed Natsuki’s hands, trying to stop them from shaking.
“All of this is going to be ok.” He whispered. “I promise.” -
Natsuki pursed her lips and gave a small nod, letting out a shaky exhale.

“Do you want to grab anything else?” Nikolai asked. “Maybe go through your sisters room or something.”
