Nikolai's mum looked at his son in disbelief. 'What?' she snapped, then looked back you Natsuki. 'You're friends with a freak.'
Nat was quite taken aback by this, and chewed the inside of her mouth nervously. Now she knew what Nik meant by "not having the best relationship with his parents". -
“Hey!” Nikolai said angrily. “Leave her alone!” He turned to Nat. “Sorry about my mom.”
Nikolai’s mom looked madder by the second, and Nikolai braced for her to yell at him. -
'You little-' his mum started, stepping forward.
Before she could finish her sentence, Natsuki shouted, 'Leave him alone, you...' She covered her mouth the moment the words came out. She hadn't realised she was capable of talking for the longest time, nonetheless yell. -
“You can talk!” Nikolai said in amazement. “Like, really talk!”
But the realization and astonishment was cut short by his mom.
“So she CAN talk.” She said, glaring at Nikolai. “Meaning someone was lying to me.” -
Natsuki shuffled closer to her friend. She tried to defend him, but when she opened her mouth, nothing would come out. She supposed this was why she had stopped talking in the first place - her words only lead to trouble.
She reached for Nik's hand and held it in her own, partially to stop hers shaking. -
Nikolai’s face went hot, and he knew he was blushing.
“Mom, I didn’t know she could talk.” He said, surprisingly calmer with Nat holding his hand. -
'Yeah, OK,' his mother said sarcastically. 'So how did she tell you her name? How did you two meet?' She was shouting now.
Natsuki looked at Nik, unsure how they were going to get out of this one. -
“She wrote it down on her phone, and showed her name to me.” Nikolai started, deciding to tell his mom the truth, even though he knew she wouldn’t believe him. “And we just sort of crashed into each other trying to get to class”
Nikolai’s mom didn’t buy it though. -
'Go to your room!' his mother yelled, pointing to one of the doors that went off to the side. 'And as for you...' she grabbed some of Natsuki's dark hair and pulled her out of the chair.
Nat winced in pain, wondering how Nikolai put up with this each and every day. -
“Hey!” Nikolai yelled. “I’m fine if you yell at me over this, but leave her out of it!” Where was his dad when he needed him? Granted, he wouldn’t do much besides argue with his mom, but at least it would cause a distraction.
“Why should I?” Nikolai’s mom yelled, not moving an inch. -
Natsuki tried to squirm out of his mother's grip, but didn't succeed. The more she tried to pull away, the more she pulled on her hair.
She wondered what would happen if she tried to punch his mum. She'd done martial arts classes as a kid, but would defending herself only make things worse? -
“LET. HER. GO.” Nikolai yelled, walking toward his mom.
“I though I told you to go to your room.” She said, still not loosening the grip on Natsuki. If anything, she seemed to be holding on tighter.
“And I thought I said to let my friend go.” Nikolai responded. -
Natsuki tried wriggling again, grabbing her hair and trying to pull it out of Nik's mother's hand. It didn't work, and only made her head hurt.
-
“Your friend?!” His mom scoffed. “This little freak is considered a friend?!”
Nikolai had enough. He grabbed his moms wrist, the one holding Nat by the hair, and tried to pry her fingers out so she could let go of Nat. -
Nikolai succeeded in trying to pry her fingers open, which resulted in his mother and Nat stumbling backwards, and in Natsuki's case, on the floor.
She looked up at Nik gratefully, rubbing her head.
