“I’m so sorry.” Nikolai said, helping Natsuki get up. “My mom is….. a big jerk to say the least.”
-
Natsuki gave a small smile, and before she could stop herself she stepped forward and gave him a hug.
-
Nikolai froze in shock for a second before smiling and hugging her back.
“Not to ruin this,” Nikolai said after a bit. “But when is your brother coming? Did he read the message?”
He didn’t WANT Nat to have to leave, but he knew it was the better option, especially since his mom was super angry at her, for no reason other than Nat not being able to talk. -
Natsuki pulled away slowly, then pulled out her phone to check her texts. She frowned and held out her phone, showing Nik how Xiao had not replied.
-
“Is he asleep or something?” Nikolai asked, worried for Nat. he knew that his house was NOT a good option for her to stay at, but he also worried about why her brother hadn’t answered her texts, or even read them according to the phone.
-
Natsuki shrugged, taking another look at her phone before putting it back in Nik's hoodie pocket, still frowning. Staying here wasn't a good option, but she knew she couldn't run to the other side of town without getting caught by whoever was following her - which, she could by the suit, was a foster worker.
-
“Well you can stay here as long as you need to.” Nikolai offered. “You probably don’t want to though…” he remembered everything that went down just minutes ago.
“Totally not changing the subject….. you can talk?” Nikolai asked curiously. -
Natsuki couldn't answer that. She had the ability to talk, but when she tried to she couldn't. She and Xiao had concluded she was selectively mute, but Nat didn't want to be mute, so it was confusing.
She tried to explain this as she wrote on her phone, then holding it out for Nik to see. -
“So you know how to talk, but when you try it just… doesn’t work?” Nikolai asked softly. It wasn’t something he’d ever experienced, obviously, but he could still imagine what it was like.
(Ironically I was like that for a bit… it had more to do with the people I was around though….) -
(Was it more around your family or the ppls at school?)
Natsuki nodded, not knowing how else to explain it. -
(My school, I could talk to my family mostly fine… I had to go to a school counselor and a speech therapist over it though… and now I can’t shut up😂)
“I’m sorry.” Nikolai said. “That’s gotta be really confusing.” He didn’t really know what else to say. -
She nodded again and fiddled with her hands. The door Nik's mum had emerged from opened again to reveal a sleepy-looking man, which Nat assumed was his father.
(Sorry I disappeared, was having an argument with my mum 🙄
Neither can I shut up, unless it's in maths class... I have a cranky teacher lol) -
(It’s totally fine😂)
“Who is this?” Nikolai’s dad asked, pointing at Nat.
“That’s Natsuki, my friend.” Nikolai said, knowing that his dad wouldn’t care. He must’ve lost the parent challenge, because he was stuck with a super angry and aggressive mother, and a negligent father who did nothing but argue with his mom. -
The man looked down at Natsuki, then back at Nik. 'Alright,' he said, not looking like he actually cared, and walked into the kitchen. Nik's mother was grumbling bad words under her breath and disappeared into the other room, slamming the door behind her.
Natsuki glanced at Nikolai thoughtfully, wondering how he ended up with such... interesting parents. -
“I’m really sorry about my mom.” Nikolai said, lowering his voice so that only Nat could hear. He knew he already apologized, but he didn’t feel like he did enough after what his mom did.
