'For what?' Anne said, cradling Lily's head in her lap to make her feel more comfortable on the ground. 'You did nothing wrong.'
-
"I've ruined your dress, I've made a mess of things,"
-
Anne just shrugged it off. 'We'll get a new one. It's not your fault you're sick.'
-
Lily responded with a grunt. She lay flat on her back breathing lightly, covering her mouth whenver she thought she was going to gag. She reached out her hand and found Anne's squeezing it weakly. "Don't leave" she whispered. "Don't leave me on my own" she begged tears in her eyes.
-
Anne's brow furrowed. She'd never seen her friend like this, and it only made her worry for her grow. 'I won't,' she promised. 'Lily, you're very unwell. But you'll get better. The doctor is coming.'
-
Lily's eyes widened. "No, no, no, no" she whimpered. She had a flashback to when she was working at the factory and their had been an outbreak of influenza. The old drunken man had called for a doctor, thinking many of them would die. But this "doctor" turned out to be some sort of mad scientist who experimented on dead bodies. That's when she'd ran away, cold and ill in the middle of the street. But an old woman had helped her grow her strength back, and now she'd have to run again.
-
Anne brushed a curl out of Lily's face and squeezed her hand, trying to calm her down. 'It'll be fine. And I'll be with you the whole time, I promise.'
-
Lily shook her head. "No, no, let me out please!" she begged trying to lift herself up.
-
'Absolutely not,' Anne said firmly, holding Lily to the ground with force that she couldn't get up but it didn't hurt her. 'Lily, listen to me. If you run away you might die. And I'm not letting that happen.'
-
I'll die either way-she screamed inside her head. She kicked her legs and tried to get Anne off her but was to weak right now to do much. "Let me go!" she whimpered managing to remove one of Anne's hands.
-
'Lily, stop,' Anne snapped. 'I mean it.'
-
"No, no, no, no, no, no, no!" she kept muttering the word over and over but eventually lay back and closed her eyes.
-
Anne put a hand on Lily's cheek. 'You'll be fine, I promise.'
Mariella came rushing down the stairs. 'The doctor is coming. How are you feeling, dear Lily?' -
Lily flinched slightly at the gesture but didn't move her hand away. She kept muttering the same word over and over. No, No, No, No.
-
Mariella's expression grew even more worried when Lily didn't reply. 'Anne, I'm waiting outside for the doctor.' She rushed out the bakery.
