Asteria shook her head, hoping that it wasn't things like, "paying off her debt" and so on. Hopefully she would get an actual reason.
-
Quince closed his eyes and took a deep breath. This would take a bit of careful explaining.
“Oh all right. I’ll tell you. But first, please take a seat. Martino informed me that being in a relaxed environment helps conversations flow more smoothly. The chair at my desk is very soft and is made out of the finest leather, so please sit down. It should be relaxing enough.” -
None of that stuff about his chair being expensive was necessary, but she sat down anyway. She automatically wrapped her arms around herself and crossed one leg over the other, closing herself off, protecting herself from whatever Quince might say or do. She looked up at him, waiting for him to continue.
-
Quince took a deep breath.
“That bowl you stole was a bowl my sister made for me.” -
Asteris blinked, wondering where this was going.
-
“My sister died.”
-
Asteria loosened her arms a little bit but still kept them crossed. And she quickly pieces everything together. "I'm sorry about her," she said. "But that's still a twisted reason for keeping me here."
-
“But it also makes your actions even more twisted, does it not?” Quince raised an eyebrow at her.
-
"I told you I didn't have control over the situation," Asteria glared at him. "I didn't have control over whether I stole something or not. It could have been that bowl. It could have been a pocket watch. It could have been a pen for all I know! But every time I steal something I give it back. I gave the bowl back. I replaced what was lost. So why are you keeping me here?"
-
“Why not? This is just compensation for you stealing the bowl, is it not?”
-
"I compensated you when I returned the bowl," Asteria said. "I took a bowl, I returned the exact same bowl. I owe you nothing."
-
“Well, let’s put it this way,” Quince straightened his posture to imitate that of a stern businessman. “If a murderer were to kill someone and hide the body, yet returned their corpse the very next day, would that make their crime justified?”
-
"Except a bowl is not a human life. It's not as if I removed the memories of your sister before I gave back the bowl," Asteria argued.
(You know when I said an expensive sentimental item my thinking was, he was upset enough about it that he would call the police. But then hearing she had klepto he decided it would be better for her to serve her sentence not in prison.) -
(OH-)
(Here I got it, lemme fix that 👌)
A small fire of fury twinkled in his eyes, but it dimmed down quickly enough. Quince was used to dealing with difficult conversations when it came to business. While Asteria did have a point, he was too stubborn to admit it, and Quince knew that too.
“I was going to press charges against you for robbing that priceless artifact.” Quince stated, his voice colder than fresh ice being popped into a drink. “But keeping you here instead sounded like a much brighter idea. Besides, dealing with the court is a hassle, so either way it’s a win-win for me.” -
Asteria scoffed at him. "I hope you someday realize how horrible a person you are," she glared. She didn't wait for another response. She stood up and stormed out the room and down the hall to look for Roxy. Hopefully at least she was enjoying herself.
