Roxy squealed, her voice reaching a high note she didn’t even know she could reach. “Are you flirting with the hot guy?”
“Sorry, what?” Carlos sputtered, dumbfounded. “All she did was compliment my cooking? Which, thank you, Asteria.” He smiled warmly at her. -
Aster looked at Carlos. "You're welcome," she said, then turned to Roxy with an expression of confusion on her face. "I'm just being honest. You've tasted my cooking, you know it pales in comparison to this."
-
“I think your cooking tastes better, though.” Roxy said before taking another bite out of the pleasant toast. While her words said another thing, her actions showed her practically devouring the toast. “It hits different.”
Carlos raised an eyebrow at Roxy’s antics before nudging Asteria gently, chuckling. “We can sure see that.” -
"Especially considering how quickly you're gobbling it down," Aster said.
-
Carlos snickered quietly into his hand whilst Roxy almost choked on her food.
“No! I’m not gobbling this… toast down!” Roxy protested, glaring down at the toast.
“Do you two have any suggestions on how to improve the dish?” Carlos asked, regaining his ability to talk. -
I just told you there's no way it can be better, it's at it's peak of deliciousness," Aster said. She looked at Roxy. "Do you have any suggestions?"
-
Roxy stared down at the plate full of tiny crumbs, wiping the corner of her mouth with a napkin while humming in thought.
“Well, it could be sweeter.”
“If I make it any sweeter then we’ll be dealing with cavities.” Carlos joked. Roxy wasn’t laughing, but offered him a sympathetic smile. -
"Well I think it's great the way it is," Asteria said. She got up off the stool. "Anyway, we'll be going. I was planning on introducing Roxy to Martino to see if the two wouldn't rip each other's heads off. I'll see you later."
-
Carlos chuckled quietly into his hand, a bit disheartened to see Asteria leave so quickly. He bade farewell to the two girls, and off they went.
Martino was in the living room dusting off some beautiful lamps that, upon inspection, seemed as if it could cost thousands of dollars. -
Asteria still didn't quite know her way through the house, so she just went where she knew and hoped Martino might be there. The dining room was closest to the kitchen. Aster peeked her head in just to make sure, and just as she suspected, the butler wasn't in there. The only other place she'd really been was the living room, so she made her way there.
Lo and behold, there was Martino cleaning some lamps. "Martino," she called. "I want you to meet Roxy." -
Roxy, who was hiding in the door way, shuffled into the room and gave Martino an awkward wave.
Martino raised a stern eyebrow, clicking his tongue. “Ah, the young miss with the fiery spirit. I remember you quite well. You got a stain on my pristine gloves. You might as well know, they just got finished being washed today. It’ll be a challenge to scrub this filth off of my glove, but it’s nice to meet you.”
Roxy shuffled even closer to Asteria. “As, I have absolutely no clue how you’ve lived with him for this long without wanting to dig a hole and jump in it. This man, if we can even call him one, is like a dragon! If I were wearing boots, I’d be shaking in them right about now.”
“A gentleman, if I may correct your speech.” Martino stated, his voice cold. Yet, he looked amused at Roxanne’s clear fear. When Roxy wasn’t looking, he had stepped closer to her. If he leaned down to Roxanne’s height, he’d be face to face with her. -
Asteria chuckled. "He's nothing to be afraid of. Actually, I don't think I've ever seen you afraid of anything before."
-
“Afrai… excuse me? I am not scared!” Roxy exclaimed. She whipped around and glared up into Martino’s eyes. He tilted his head slightly, amused at the fit she was throwing. “He’s just too… clean. He’s dusting off lamps, Asteria!”
“As a matter of fact, lamps should be regularly cleaned.” Martino said, his voice as sharp as glass. As it usually was, of course. “Do you mean to tell me that you don’t clean your lamps?”
“Asteria, he cleans lamps.” Roxy whispered. -
"I give my lamps an occasional dusting," Asteria commented. "Maybe once in a blue moon, but it happens."
-
“Ah,” Martino directed a polite smile at Asteria. “It seems you’re familiar with using a feather duster, unlike Ms. Roxanne over here.” He commented, his eyes wandering to Roxy’s after his direct jab. It was as if he were trying to provoke a reaction from her.
“I know how to use a feather duster! I’ve dusted a couple of things before.” Roxy retorted, her voice getting quieter at the end of her sentence. “Asteria can vouch for that! She’s seen me use one before.”
