Asteria ignored his return of her question. "It's just . . . you seemed really stressed and frustrated about something," she continued.
-
"Running a business as well as this estate can be rather exhausting.” Quince sighed, rubbing his temples with his fingers. He smiled at her. “But I appreciate your concern. I do have to ask though, why do you sound so worried?”
-
"I - I'm not sure," Asteria confessed. She just saw his upset state and felt concerned. She didn't have a particular reason for it.
-
“Ah, perhaps it is the natural human inclination to want to go and comfort someone.” Quince stated as he tried to analyze the situation. He peered curiously at her, his lips perking up into a smug smile. “But I didn’t expect for you to try to come and comfort me, of all people.”
-
"I just - I don't know," Asteria said. She started backing out of the doorway feeling embarrassed. "I'll just go now," she said before walking down the hallway.
-
“Now, now, there's no need to hurry, Asteria.” Quince pushed his hands against the desk, sliding his chair out. He promptly stood up and walked over to her. “Last night, Martino informed me that you wished to talk about your current situation. I'd appreciate it if you shared your thoughts with me.”
-
Asteria stopped, then turned back into the room looking at him with a look of surprise. Suddenly her words died in her throat. Martino had told him what had happened? And why was Quince concerned for her? How much had Martino told him?
Suddenly she was nervous about saying anything at all. Opening up to her captor. He wasn't going to listen. He wasn't going to understand. He was probably just going to pass everything she said off as nothing and her situation would only get worse because she knew there was no hope for her. -
“If you’re not going to tell me what's ailing you about this situation, then there's nothing in my power that I can possibly do to make things feel better for you.” Quince stated coldly. However, there was a bit of sympathy in his eyes. “Now would be the best time to tell me what you aren’t pleased with.”
-
Asteria instinctively made herself smaller at the sudden harshness. He wasn't going to listen to her. He was in a place of control and she had a feeling he wouldn't like it if she questioned that control.
Gathering up what little bit of courage she had, she quietly asked, "Are you going to extend my time here every time I do something you don't like?" -
Quince raised an eyebrow at her, his lips pressed into a thin line.
“I may seem like a demon to you, Asteria, but I’m not a controlling monster. I wouldn’t do that.” -
"That's what you inferred in the dining room though," Asteria murmured. "You said it was a punishment for the prank. So if similar things happened that you didn't like happened and I was behind them, I'd get more time added on. Like a prisoner with bad behavior."
-
*Imply
-
“It was an implication, not a guaranteed punishment.” Quince stated calmly. “It could’ve been an empty threat that held no meaning inside of it.”
-
"The punishment was guaranteed. Future punishments were implied," Aster said. She'd regained some of her fire, now glaring up at Quince. "And when you're being held captive, any threat is terrifying."
-
“Asteria….” Quince sighed in frustration, rubbing his temples once more. “Do you know exactly why you’re here?”
