Rhyder nodded with Sylvya's statements and glared at his father, agreeing with everything Sylvya said.
Judas sighed and ran his hand through his hair, tapping his foot to an unknown rhythm. "Alright, fine, I get it. We can't force you to marry each other, we're asking you to." Taking his hand from his hair, he looked seriously at the two teenagers. "But just so we're clear, all members of our groups have been informed of the engagement, and some might not take too kindly to it suddenly being called off. So until we think of something else, can you two please act like you're engaged at least?" -
Sylvya scoffed and directed her statement towards her father. "Yeah, unless they've been informed in the past hour, I'd be ten bucks our field guys don't know yet." After seeing his shrug, she turned her attention back to Judas. "Don't act like there's already peace. Right now, the engagement is just a rumor; people won't riot if it's called off. However, I do see your 'please' and raise you a conditional 'yes.'" She lowered the two knives and turned to Rhyder, waiting for his answer. If there was something she couldn't stand, it was someone making her decisions for her, and she imagined nobody else enjoyed it either. The only reason she had agreed to this was because the Shroud leader asked, but she was determined to find another solution.
Martin watched everything, from Judas' hair rub to Sylvya's glance at Rhyder. He was sort of sitting on the fence with this; he didn't want to make the two get married, but he also didn't know any other way to bring peace. On top of that, he didn't really have updated knowledge about his daughter. All he really knew was that she had a temper, and that was only because he overheard jokes made after training exercises. He'd also heard stories about her strange battle maneuvers and crazy but successful tactics, but he wasn't sure what part of that was exaggeration. Needless to say, he didn't really know much about his daughter and her personality. At this particular meeting, he almost wish he did. -
Rhyder stood up and nodded to Sylvya, then glared again at the two leaders. Realizing that he had made the decision for them both earlier without asking her was the wrong choice, and was glad she was giving him another chance to back out. "Alright, I agree to it as well, but with our conditions. Which are..." He turned to Sylvya, hoping for her to continue with the conditions she had.
Judas sighed in relief when Sylvya lowered the knife and gave him a 'yes,' even if it was conditional. Turning to Martin, he could tell that the other man wasn't sure what to do here. from what he had seen and heard, the father and daughter weren't close at all, so Martin probably wouldn't be able to to convince his daughter of pretty much anything. Because of this, he was happy to accept any conditions the two teenagers had. -
Sylvya experienced a quick moment of panic. Actually, her only condition was that they immediately go back and try something different if they thought of something, but she decided to BS it out for both their sakes. "Okay. Of course, the first condition is that the whole thing be called off if anyone thinks of another way to bring peace. The second is that I get to tell my people my own way." She stared at her father for a little. "I know them better and know what they'd believe. Granted, I know what everyone would believe, but apparently Bonzo over here already told people. And what did you tell them, by the way? That your son was in an arranged marriage with someone he didn't know or love, so there would be peace between the groups? Is that what you told them?" She knew she was going off track, but was actually curious what Judas had done.
-
Rhyder nodded at the conditions that Sylvya had laid out and looked at his father inquisitively, also wondering what his father had told their people.
Judas nodded in agreement with the conditions. "Okay, those conditions sound fair. As for what I told my people, I explained that once you two are married, the heirs, the only people they will follow orders from other than the two of us, will be family. And because you two will be family, the two groups will merge and are no longer allowed to fight among themselves." -
Sylvya instantly developed a migraine, and not just because Judas didn't answer her question. She pressed her left hand into her temples in an effort to ease the stupidity-induced headache, her right hand held up in the universal "stop" signal. Inwardly, she was begging everything she knew that the man wouldn't say another word. Foow orders, my ass. Like hell, I'm gonna follow orders after this BS. And so much for people being fooled into willingly making peace. Now they're being ordered to. It almost made her cry to think that this was the type of family she was marrying into.
Martin had stared at Judas a full minute before turning away, running his fingers through his hair. He wasn't really sure whether to laugh maniacally or cry hysterically, it was so stupid. Why should the kids have to act like they were in love if Judas was just going to come straight out and tell them they were being forced to? He was developing a headache of his own -
Rhyder facepalmed at his father's stupid actions. Why do I have to be his son... sometimes I really wish I were someone else's kid...
Noticing everyone's signs of irritation, Judas became frustrated and a little flustered. "Alright, fine, I get it. What's done is done though. I accepted your conditions, so lets go back inside already and finalize this thing with the rest of the people here. They've been watching from the doorway for a while, and I imagine they're getting impatient." He turned to the doorway of the building to emphasize that he already knew everyone was there watching. -
Sylvya had looked up just in time to see Rhyder's face-palm, and was slightly comforted. Maybe that meant he wasn't as stupid as his father... She sighed "There's not a convention in there. Those are assistants, here to protect, remember? It's not like we have anyone to answer to. Waiting is their job." By this time, she wanted to shoot herself. This sort of person for a father-in-law? Oh god.
Although Martin was again irritated at Judas' thought train, and how the man didn't seem to understand the purpose and use of assistants, he had to agree that they should go back inside. It was getting rather hot outside, and who knew who was watching them? -
Rhyder shrugged and started towards the door slowly. "We still shouldn't keep them waiting. Besides, I'm sure we both want some time to ourselves to process all this." Wiping some sweat from his forehead, Rhyder sighed. "Plus its hot as hell out here, especially in a suit..."
Judas nodded at the statements his son was making and started towards the door as well. As he passed by Martin, he whispered to him, "Should we tell them about the new living arrangements right now, inside, or tonight?" Slightly worried for his life, he was hoping Martin would say to tell them later that night, so he wouldn't be there for Sylvya's inevitable, and possibly dangerous, outburst. -
Sylvya had worn battle fatigues in worse weather than this, so she was totally oblivious to the heat. The skirt was helping, too. Nevertheless, she shrugged and followed her new fiancee inside, still peeved at being told what to do. Not seeing this as a battlefield, where she would gladly take orders from any officer above her, she didn't enjoy being pushed around; usually she was the one pushing around. She silently trudged back to the building, keeping her arms crossed.
Martin's eyes widened when he got an image of what his daughter would do the instant she heard the news. "Oh lord.." he whispered back. "Definitely tonight. Later tonight, when you two are nowhere near her." He didn't like the idea of putting it off, but at least Sylvya would still have a night to pack before she had to move. -
Judas sighed in relief, thankful for Martin's understanding. "Okay, thank you so much... you're a life saver. Literally..." Heading back inside, he took his seat again.
Rhyder walked through the doors as they were opened for them, casually returning to his seat next to his father and being very thankful for air conditioning. Sighing, he began to try and process what he could about the day so far. Getting a fiancee was definitely not on my list of things I expected to happen today... -
Martin chuckled a little and nodded, following the other inside "I know.."
Sylvya marched in right after Rhyder and took her seat. She deadpanned at the table, not looking up or even flinching when her father sat next to her. No, her mind was filled with ways that she could kill her father and get away with it. She rubbed at her tatto through her shirt. All the Kramierys and those who joined the Kramiery group had to get the mark, and hers was near her left hipbone. She kind of felt silly, asking her family flames to help kill the head of her family, but it kind of made her feel better. -
Judas looked around and waited for everyone to sit down before standing and speaking. "After some debate, we have come to a compromise. Sylvya and Rhyder are engaged, but their engagement will be broken if anyone is able to come up with a better solution to provide peace. As well as that, Sylvya will be the one to reveal the engagement to the rest of the Kramiery group, as per her request." Looking to Martin and the two teenagers, he said, "Do any of you have anything else to add to that before this meeting is adjourned?"
Rhyder shook his head at his father, indicating that he had nothing else to say about the matter right now. He glanced at his new fiancee, wondering if she had anything to add. -
Sylvya and Martin were both staring at Judas, utter amusement written on both their faces. After a second of silence, Sylvya gave a small head tilt, and Martin accepted that is was his turn for sarcasm by saying "No, I think that's it. Thanks, Captain Obvious, you've summed it up perfectly." It was all Sylvya could do to keep from laughing.
The assistants, who really didn't give a crap either way, held back smiles of utter amusement as they watched their deadly, sophisticated leader act like a snarky 17-year-old. -
Catching the obvious sarcasm and getting a bit irritated, he sighed. "Alright, then this meeting is over. You are all free to go your separate ways now." Turning to Martin, he stuck out his hand to shake the other man's. "Thanks for coming today, I appreciate your cooperation in this." Turning his head a little to look at Sylvya, he added, "And I appreciate your cooperation as well."
After seeing the meeting was over, the Shroud assistants said their farewells to the Kramiery assistants before filing out, getting ready to take their leader and heir home, even though they had been told to go their separate ways.
Rhyder watched the assistants file out, then glanced at Sylvya, not exactly sure what to say to his new fiancee that he barely knew.
