Antonio waited patiently by the wagon, and while Lovino was getting him a ladder the Spaniard was speaking to distract, and try to calm, the elephant. "Gorro!" He called, and he heard a heavy snort from inside of the wagon. "Gorro, down!" This, although, did not help. The elephant trumpeted and the wagon shook.
When Lovino returned, Antonio took the ladder from him and set it against the wobbling wagon, not hesitating to start climbing up right away. -
"Antonio, be careful!" Lovino called over the noise the spooked elephant was making. The shaking wagon was making the whole ladder shake, and that, combined with the angry animal inside the wagon, made the whole situation dangerous. He bit his lip again, watching Antonio climb, though he wanted to look away.
-
Antonio was a little too focused on climbing the ladder without falling to pick up on Lovino's worry. He continued climbing, until he reached the top, and he could see clearly into the wagon. Gorro was standing, perfectly unharmed but understandably distressed. The elephant saw the trainer, and reached its trunk up through the bars to grasp the man's arm. For a second, Antonio hoped maybe the animal was only trying to ask him for help, but then Gorro was tugging him downwards, holding tightly to the Spaniard arm.
"Gorro!" The trainer yelled, trying to be confident in the animal's obedience despite having never been so scared for his life. He was pulling back, but his arm was starting to turn red where the elephant was cutting off his circulation. "Stop! Down! Down!" He yelled. -
"Antonio!" Lovino called his name helplessly, panic quickly setting in. He stretched his arm through the bars, trying to reach Gorro. If he could get the elephant's attention, calm him down, or at the very least distract him from Antonio, maybe he could direct the creature's anger towards himself instead...His heart was pounding, and he could only imagine how frightened Antonio must be.
-
Antonio's arm was just starting grow numb of the pain when the elephant decided to, for seemingly no reason, let go of him. Before the animal could change its mind and go to grab him again, Antonio was already scrambling away from his beloved elephant, down the ladder.
The pain in his arm was returning, as the circulation rushed back to it, but he was more focused on the Italian he saw reaching into the bars. "No, Lovi! He'll hurt you!" He cried, jumping into action to rush up to the ringmaster. He wrapped his good arm around Lovino's torso, pulling him backwards away from the bars seconds before Gorro's trunk was reaching for them. "What are you doing!?" Antonio yelped at the Italian, still holding him back securely. -
"H-He was hurting you!" Lovino cried, trying to pull away from Antonio. He was only using one arm, but he was stronger than the ringmaster. "Let me go, I can do it!" He protested. Seeing Antonio being hurt like that, by the creature he trusted so much...it made Lovino feel sick. He wasn't sure what good he could do against a furious African elephant, but he'd much rather face it himself than watch Antonio risk it.
-
Antonio held on tight, keeping Lovino back as best as he could without strangling him. "That is an animal that weighs much, much more than you. It's heavy and big and you don't know how to stop it, so don't get yourself hurt trying," Antonio stated, though it was more begging. The idea of Lovino getting hurt in his place was terrifying. "He's just hungry, I've just got to feed him, see?" He suggested to the Italian to get him to think it was an easy fix.
-
Lovino stopped struggling and turned around to face Antonio, their faces mere inches apart. "Don't get hurt." He pleaded, half-glaring at the Spaniard. "Let me help, I can get the hay..." He offered, glancing at the red ring around Antonio's arm where Gorro had grabbed at him.
-
Antonio blinked at Lovino, being suddenly so close to him, and in full view of any curious wagon-watchers. Being so close, he was almost tempted to close the little bit of space that was left, but resisted the urge. "I'll be careful, I promise," he mumbled, a bit flustered and red. "And I can toss it in myself, I don't want you getting near him again."
-
Lovino wanted to argue, but a cough from nearby made him pause, looking over. Two of the tightrope walkers were staring out at them, muttering to each other. Lovino quickly stepped away from Antonio. He wouldn't want any rumors to start, he knew they would only cause trouble for Antonio and himself. "Be careful," He breathed. He would be more than willing to step in if it seemed like Antonio was in danger again, no matter how much the trainor might not want him to.
-
Antonio followed Lovino's gaze to the tightrope walkers, who had very obviously seen the little encounter as something suspicious. With Lovino having stepped away, the Spaniard looked at his arm. It wasn't broken, but the red ring around it was starting to bruise. "I think we need to talk later about the show. I don't know if Gorro will be out by tomorrow," he said, looking up at the Italian, then turning away and walking to the feed wagon.
-
Lovino nodded, watching Antonio walk off. Seeing that he could do no more to help, he turned and started back towards his own wagon. The head acrobat- Lovino had never actually learned her name, he'd always been too busy avoiding her- stood in front of his wagon, arms crossed, glaring down at him. "What, exactly, was that?" She asked, clearly upset. "That was quite a little display with the elephant trainor." Lovino blushed and narrowed his eyes. "He was hurt. I was worried. I can't have the crowd's favorite act unable to perform." He answered coldly. She seemed to accept this response, although she leaned close to him, trying to find some sort of hole through his response. "...Fine. But if I see you two getting too close, you'd better be careful." She smirked in a way that made Lovino want to shove her. "Is that a threat?" He growled. "Only if you two really are that close." She smiled innocently before quickly running off. Lovino hoped she wasn't headed for Antonio.
He stepped into his wagon and locked the door behind him, sighing heavily. He sat down at the small desk and pulled out some papers. Plans for the show tomorrow. Lovino scanned over them and frowned, knowing that if Antonio couldn't free Gorro in time it would cause some trouble. He'd have to make a back up plan, maybe extend one of the other acts just in case. -
Antonio got to the feed wagon, opening the door and closing it behind him. The fact that the girls had seen them was giving him a practical heart attack- his worst fear was being found out as liking men and being lynched for it. But another fear that Antonio had was dying as a man that never kissed someone that he truely cared for. If Antonio never got to kiss Lovino, it would devastate him, especially if it was because Lovino didn't want to kiss him.
The Spaniard tried to shake away the thoughts, nabbing two bales of hay. He opened the door again, and carrying each bale on one shoulder with both of his arms, even the sore one. -
After messing around with the show schedule for a while, Lovino put the paperwork away and sighed, running a hand through. He was worried about Gorro, angry at the cocky head acrobat, nervous about those two tightrope walkers, and dying to see Antonio. He knew it wouldn't be safe to go now, while people were still suspicious, so maybe he could sneak out after dark and see him. He shook his head, what was he thinking? He would be putting Antonio in danger if anyone caught them, and he highly doubted that the elephant trainor felt the same way about him. Lovino groaned and shook his head again. He wasn't even sure how he felt about Antonio. He knew it was more than a friendly attachment, but it was so wrong...
