Lovino nodded and shuffled forward a bit. "Do you want help?" He asked. If anyone see had heard that, they would've dropped dead in shock. Most of the other performers, as mentioned before, saw Lovino as nothing but a problem. Seeing him offering to help with something was a rare sight indeed.
-
Antonio smiled, finding the offer a bit odd yet in a positive way. "If you have time, sure," he nodded, mving to the wall to hang the broom back up. Above the hook where the broom was kept, there was a shelf blocked off by more bars, that held bales of hay. The only way to get to it was by a ladder, about ten feet up the wall. "Are you alright with heights?"
-
Lovino hesitated, taking in the height of the ladder. It wouldn't be enjoyable, but Antonio balanced higher up in the air than this on almost a daily basis. He steeled himself and nodded. "Yes."
-
"Then do you mind climbing up there and handing down some hay for me?" He stepped forward, swinging the door open enough to let Lovino in. "There's just a latch at the top, no lock."
-
Lovino nodded, slipping past the gate. He carefully placed one foot on the ladder, relieved to see that it seemed sturdy enough to keep from shaking. He quickly climbed up to the shelf. Lovino lifted a hand to undo the latch, and carefully lifted his other arm to reach back and grab a bale of hay. He took a step down and leaned over, stretching the bale down towards Antonio. The ladder trembled the slightest bit and Lovino bit his lip, knowing if he leans over any further he'd fall.
-
Antonio gave the Italian a minute to get the bale. While he reached up to take it from him, he saw Lovino biting his lip with the slightest little shake of the ladder. "It's alright, Lovi. It's a sturdy ladder," he tried to assure him.
-
Lovino blushed at the nickname, also a bit embarrassed, knowing he was overreacting over the slightest shake. When Antonio took the hay from him he quickly reached up to reclasp the latch and climb down from the ladder, much preferring to be on ground level. "Alright, now what?" He asked. As much as he hated being in charge of the circus, he was used to explaining things to the new performers. It felt a little odd to be the one learning now.
-
He set the bale down on the ground, bending over to snap open the strings that were holding it together. "Now we've just got to spread it," he said, taking a big clump of it between two hands and tossing it elsewhere on the floor.
-
Lovino mimicked his actions, taking an armful of hay and dumping it out into the floor, spreading it out until the golden straws made almost a carpet on the floor of the cage. It was simpler than Lovino would've thought.
-
Antonio continued doing this, along with Lovino's help, until the entire bale was gone. He sighed and brushed his hands together. "Well, that about does it," he hummed.
-
"Anything else?" Lovino asked. The lion trainers were cruel, and the horses had never interested Lovino much, so he was slightly desperate to find an excuse to stay with Antonio and the elephants a while longer. He nudged a stray piece of hay with his foot, waiting for an answer.
-
Antonio shrugged, tucking his hands into the pockets of his pants. "Well..." He stepped towards Gorro, who was laying down. "You can stay for a little while." He knelt down, giving the elephant's head a gentle pet.
-
Lovino nodded quickly. "As long as I won't bother you." He said, reaching out as Antonio had and giving Gorro a soft pat, once again fascinated at being so close to the elephants. He glanced at Antonio, then quickly back to the elephant, once again not sure what to say.
-
"Of course not," Antonio murmured, his attention beginnning to focus on how near his hand was to Lovino's. Really, if he'd wanted to, he could have moved their fingers together..
"Ah... The elephants, they seem to like you," he said, to change his aim of attention. -
"Really?" Lovino asked, still a little unused to the idea if anything warming up to him so quickly. He looked at Antonio again, and his hand, still stroking Gorro, accidentally brushed against Antonio's. He blushed and withdrew his hand, worrying he'd have made the Spaniard uncomfortable. Lovino wasn't sure what he felt towards Antonio, but he was sure that the elephant trainor only saw him as a friend, if that.
