Ella smiled back at him and sighed heavily. "That...would be really nice." She told him, sounding relieved. Her day hadn't exactly been going well, and lunch was just what she needed right now to cheer her up.
-
"How's your day been? What's working like, really?" He walked alongside her, wondering if it was appropriate to take her hand. She seemed stressed.
-
"It's been...stressful." She admitted. "And working, well...I love my job, I love spending time with all the animals..." She left out the part about the poor pay, but it was still on her mind. She was worried.
-
"Why stressful?" he asked. He reached over and took her hand anyway.
-
Ella glanced away. "...It's nothing. Just that I woke up late and everything." She gave his hand a light squeeze, glad for the gesture. His skin was cold, as always, but she found it comfortable.
-
"Oh. So it's not usually all that stressful?" he asked. He was surprised when she didn't pull away, and enjoyed the warmth of her hand.
-
Ella shrugged a little. "Not really. I like working with the animals a lot, it's just..." She almost told him about what was bothering her, but decided against it. "Nevermind. It's nothing."
-
"I really want to read your mind and find out what it is, but okay, fine. Where do you want to eat?" he asked. "It's on me today."
-
Ella thought for a moment, happy to change the subject. "Well, there is a really good little diner around the corner..."
-
"Let's go there, then." He smiled, noting that she seemed happier.
-
She nodded and smiled, leading the way. She kept her hand intertwined with his and tried not to drag him. She stopped in front of the diner and grinned. "Here it is!"
-
There was no way Rory would be eating anything from the restaurant, but he was glad she was excited.
-
Ella pulled him through the doors and sat down at a small two person table. She realized something with a small start. "Oh, Rory, I didn't realize you wouldn't eat any of this...Sorry. We can go somewhere else, if you'd prefer?"
-
He shook his head. "I'm not hungry at all. This is great, actually."
-
"Really?" She smiled, looking pleased. When the waiter came around she ordered pancakes. She knew it was a little odd to have breakfast for lunch, but it was another one of the things she used to do as a child, and this place had the best pancakes.
