Akira froze, knowing what that call had been about, but when he looked back at his dad he was actually smiling. "You finally fought them. I knew you could do it. You just have to try, kid." -
x=... Maddy blanked out and stared out her window at the reddish pink sunset. She stepped into the backyard and started sketching the various layers of colors, being sure to capture every detail.

Sure!
"Um, thanks dad. I'm kinda tired so can I go finish my homework?" "Okay, that's fine."
So Akira walked into the house and went to his room. He laid on his bed and pulled out his notebook, looking at his picture of him and Maddy at the lake. He couldn't help smiling, he felt like he was on top of the world. -
Maddy stared at the setting sun until her eyes started to burn. The wind picked up and her paper went flying, sending all of her sketches in different directions. "No!" she shouted, chasing the papers, trying to catch them all.
-
Akira's eyes started to close and soon he drifted off into sleep. The deeper he fell into it the more he started seeing visions of a dark hallway. It was near his locker and the was laughing at the end of it.

Maddy grabbed as much as she could and watched her first sketch fly into the woods never to be seen again. The sketch was of her little brother, Max. He was three at the time. Max died of juvenile leukemia. She didn't tell anyone because it hurt too much. She had no pictures of him and this sketch was her last memory of Max. She sat on the ground, tucked the papers underneath her leg and let the tears trail down her face. "I'm so sorry, Max..." She headed inside and got ready for bed, seeing as it was now pitch black outside. She dreamt about Max and his cute little laugh, his bright blue eyes, and his adorable little boy smile. He was missing his two front teeth that year when Maddy and him used to always go playing out by the pond. Then Max fell into blackness. She grabbed his hand and pulled him up, but he kept falling, falling, falling. An image of Max on a hospital bed floated through her mind. Then the haunting beep of the heart monitor... Flatlining. The moment when the tears came, the screaming, the pain. Max was gone. He wasn't a day over 5.
