Chester & Jayden

Chester looked down and sat next to him. He glanced at the paper, then at the ground, fidgeting with his pocket watch.
-
Jayden set the paper down on the table across from them. "Maeve told me about Beatrice." He said quietly. He was tempted to ask why Chester never told him about it, but didn't, remembering that he hadn't exactly told him everything about Benji either.
-
‘Ah,’ Chester muttered, still not looking up.
-
Jayden sighed, burying his face in his hands. "I'm sorry." He said quietly. Sorry she did that do you. Sorry that I don't know who to believe. Sorry that I'm too afraid to trust you right now.
-
Chester hesitantly reached out and grabbed one of his hands. ‘It’s okay,’ he said quietly. ‘I-I get it.’
-
Jayd held his hand tight. He stared at the floor not saying anything.
-
Chester gently kissed the back of his hand, glad he wasn’t pulling away. ‘I’m sorry for not communicating it better.’
-
Jayden stayed quiet for a moment. "Why didn't you tell me when she kissed you yesterday, though?" He asked weakly. He knew he already asked it, but he still wanted an answer. "I-I told you about when Benji did it..." Why would he keep it a secret unless he has something to hide?
-
Chester looked down at their hands, staying quiet for a few moments. ‘I was scared,’ he said quietly. ‘Scared that you’d get mad and leave, no matter what I said. I-I thought that if I didn’t let you find out, you’d never know, and Beatrice would leave, and you’d stay..’
-
Jayden tried not to get angry at that. So he would never have told me this. Ever. He didn't know what angered him more, the fact that Chester thought he would leave so quickly or the fact that he was willing to lie for that long. If he was willing to lie about this, what else is he hiding?
He didn't say any of this, though. "Oh." He mumbled. -
Chester’s face fell, all hope leaving him. ‘I-I was going to tell you, eventually, I just… didn’t know how…’ he mumbled, looking away. He let go of Jayden’s hand slowly, wanting to punch himself. He was hiding something worse from Jayden, something he hadn’t even forgiven himself for. ‘I-I’m sorry, Jayden.’
-
"How long were you going to hide that from me?" Jayden muttered after a while, looking down.
-
‘I don’t know,’ Chester mumbled, hugging his knees to his chest. ‘I-I… Maeve probably would’ve told you, anyway…’
-
Oh, so you were planning on hiding this from me for who knows how long, but your sister would've told me, so it's all good.
"Even she knew?" -
‘She probably saw,’ Chester mumbled, looking down. ‘I’m sorry.’
