"Because they're terrible people, no matter what you remember about them." Ernie answered frankly. "Selene's much better."

‘N-No they’re not,’ Mahina said, whimpering. ‘Why would they be?’

Ernest sighed. He didn't want her to be so upset. "What else do you remember about them?"

‘I… remember,’ Mahina bit her lip. ‘I don’t know.’

"Then you'll just have to take my word for it. They're bad people. They haven't talked to you in, what, 12 years?" He looked up at Selene. "Did I do math right for once?"
Selene nodded. -
Mahina whimpered. ‘They would’ve had to have a good reason…’

Ernie looked up at Selene again. "Did they?" He asked quietly. He held Mahina's hand gently to try and calm her down.

Selene seemed to think. Eventually she shook her head. ‘Nothing that Mahina deserves. Nothing I knows she could forgive them for.’

Ernest didn't like the hesitation in that answer, but he gave a small nod, turning back to Mahina. "See?" He asked gently.

Mahina’s eyes welled with tears. ‘You don’t know that,’ she said in a voice barely above a whisper.

Ernest winced. "Why on earth are you so insistent about your parents being good people?" He murmured.

‘Because I know them,’ Mahina snapped, sitting up, glaring.

"What do you know about them?" Ernie asked quietly, keeping any judging tones out of his voice.

‘I…’ Mahina hesitated. She scowled. ‘That’s none of your business!’ She stood up and walked towards the door.
