Mildred noticed this and frowned slightly, but didn’t say anything. ‘It does seem fun. Y’know, I thought you were exaggerating when you said people get really tense around you.’
-
"I wish I was exaggerating. You'd think I was here to tell them their child died." Jack said. A group of adults gasped. A few fell to the ground. "No one has died. I was giving an example." Jack said to the crowd of people who were obviously eavesdropping.
-
Mildred found it both amusing and sad. ‘Good lord. What have you done to gain such a reputation? You’re one of the kindest people I’ve met.’
-
"they do this because I'm royalty. It's not customary for an heir to the throne to leave the castle much less one working as the king." Jack said as people started to nervously whisper to themselves. Jack held a hand to his eye patch as he started to get self conscious.
-
‘Pfft, that’s ridiculous. So you’re just confined to your castle all day?’ Mildred asked. She noticed his change in demeanour and wanted to comfort him in some way, but wasn’t sure how.
-
"yep. Like a very popular prisoner. The only time I'm allowed to be out on the town are festivals hosted by the royal family. Even then they get a bit flighty." Jack said. He rubbed his eye patch. A group of children scattered to make room for jack and Mildred as they walked.
-
‘That’s crap. Excuse my language,’ Mildred said. “Crap” and “damn” were almost as bad as actually swear words to her. ‘You’re the king, you can do whatever you want.’ She didn’t like the way the children looked at them.
-
"I'm only the prince currently. Maybe it's just a societal difference." Jack said. But despite that, after hearing Mildred say that Jack's shoulders eased their tensions and he put his hand down. The very idea he wasn't a prisoner in his castle was a hopeful thought to him
-
‘You can still do whatever you want. You’re not even scary, I don’t know why people look at you like you’ve just killed someone,’ Mildred said.
-
"I would be scared of a person who could do anything. Maybe it's just natural. I'm sure people were scared when the human princes walked into town too right?" Jack deflected. He looked around at the shops, searching for a particular dress shop.
-
‘I guess. Not scared, from what I’ve seen, just being all over them. Like they’re a celebrity, except they kind of are,’ Mildred said.
-
"I'd appreciate that kind of attention, but perhaps us vampires are disillusioned towards the monarchy. My family has an image we uphold. They loved to act scary so the people wouldn't worry too much about opposing us." Jack said
-
‘You’re still a person, thought. Not some coldblooded jerk. If you were a coldblooded jerk I wouldn’t be alive right now,’ Mildred said.
-
Jack smiled happily before pointing out a tailor shop. It had been painted a dark purple which made it stand out from the crowd. In the window there were dresses that looked like they had been pulled straight out of a fantasy novel with intricate laces and delicate silk. "Look, it seems we reached our first destination." Jack said
-
Mildred turned her gaze to the tailor shop with an excited smile. ‘It’s beautiful.’
