Hazel stared at him, her face falling. ‘What?’ she said, sitting up. ‘Why would you even say that? You promised we’d still be together. You promised we’d text and call and everything.’
-
Theo hated to see her face fall. He sighed. He couldn't take it back, or else her dad would have to break them up for him. He didn't want a fight. "I-I know, but... Come on, you could do better than some kid that can only call you every other week, I promise."
-
Hazel looked like she was about to cry. She glared, then stood up and walked to her own bed. ‘You can just say you don’t want to be with me. You probably have some pretty girl waiting back for you in France,’ she muttered, grabbing out some clothes to get changed into. She walked towards the door to get changed in the bathroom.
-
"What? No, of course not!" Theo stood up, wanting to follow before knowing she went to the bathroom. He kicked his suitcase. "Dammit!"
-
Hazel slammed the door on her way out. She walked into the bathroom and got changed, suppressing her tears.
-
Theo covered his head with his hands before grabbing one of his notebooks from his backpack and writing with pen: I'M not the one wanting us to break up. There's no pretty girl waiting for me in France, I promise. I'm so, so, so sorry. -Theodore He ripped the paper and put it on her bed before starting to pack up again.
-
Hazel stomped downstairs once she’d mildly calmed down. She walked into the kitchen and made herself some breakfast, trying not to think about Theo.
-
Theo finished packing and grabbed them before going down the stairs and putting them by his shoes. He waited to get some toast, away from Hazel. He didn't know what to say other than 'at least you only have to hate me for an hour and then I'm gone forever' which was NOT the right thing to say.
-
Hazel spread jam on her toast before taking her plate back upstairs to her room, noticing Theo walking out. She slammed the door again and sat on her bed. She read the note before crumpling it and chucking it in the bin.
-
Hazel's dad walked in to get a cup of coffee as Theo was getting toast.
"Next time you suggest something like this, you be the one to tell Hazel." Theo muttered.
"What was that?" Hazel's dad asked, eyes narrowing.
"I was just asking if I'm allowed to tell her the real reason why I'm suggesting we break up." -
Hazel’s father glared, making his coffee. ‘Ugh, fine,’ he snapped. ‘Maybe it’ll make her stop slamming doors.’
-
"Thank you." Theo said, grabbing his toast because it popped up at this point, and walked up to Hazel's room, knocking on the door. "Hazel, please, can we just talk?"
-
‘No!’ Hazel snapped from her room, taking a bite from her toast. ‘What is there to talk about?’
-
"Please, Hazel." He sighed. "It wasn't me who wanted us to break up, ok?"
-
Hazel paused, going quiet for a moment. ‘Fine,’ she said quietly, looking down.
