'How many nights has he been gone?' Collins asked. She knew she'd already asked a question like this, but maybe Florence had been counting how many times night had fallen.
-
"I stopped counting.... at 100." Florence said. He stretched all three of his hands. He mimicked a violin
-
'So, a long time ago,' Collins muttered.
-
"yeah... but he has to.... come back... or he'd leave me.... all alone.... as far as he knew." Florence said. The creator once promised he'd never have to feel alone while he was there.
-
Collins pursed her lips, wriggling the pin through the last shackle lock. 'But what will you do if he doesn't?' she asked again. The shackle broke open.
-
"I... don't..... know." Florence said. He stretched completely then mimicked an entire full orchestra playing twinkle twinkle Little star.
-
Collins listened to him mimicked the song, tilting her head to the side. After a little bit, she asked, 'Is the assistant researcher still here?'
-
"he doesn't... stay for long...... he says it's too.... dangerous." Florence said. He saw something dart across the floor and he darted over to catch it.
-
Collins put the very bent pin in her pocket. 'That's probably for the best.'
-
"He should... bring food..... next time... if he... ever comes back." Florence said holding up a mouse.
-
Collins grimaced at the sight of the mouse. 'I've got food,' she said, searching her satchel for her sandwhich. 'I hope you're not allergic to peanut butter.'
-
"what's an... allergy?" Florence asked, cocking his head. He mimicked the squeak of the currently frantic mouse
-
'Well, it's when your immune system can't cope with something, so you get very sick when exposed to it. Some people are allergic to peanuts.' Collins grabbed out her sandwich, which was wrapped in clingfilm.
-
"my body.... is great..... at filtering out.... poison." Florence said. It was one of the features he'd developed over the years from the assistant researchers injections. They still hurt though.
-
'That's good,' Collins said, not wanting to make him sick in case he did have an allergy. She broke the sandwich in half after taking off the clingfilm. 'Here you go.' She held out one half.
