"well, when you play dodge, the researchers take out a machine and see how much you can dodge. Once you finish one stage it gets faster. I got all the way to guns." Florence said proudly. He smiled wide and spread out his wings.

Collins blinked. ‘I, er, don’t think that’s a good thing, but… congratulations?’ She licked her ice cream again. ‘That’s er, wow.’

"I almost won. Gary said I was gonna be great and that I got the farthest in all the tests. He even said I was all the stars." Florence said, biting the ice cream again and mimicking the bouncing sound of a tennis ball.

‘Right. And that test was to, like, test reflexes or something?’ Collins asked.

"it was to see how fast everyone was. It was hard because I couldn't use my wings after awhile but I got through cannons without breaking both of my wings and when they healed I tucked my wings so well that I only mostly lost feathers." Florence said proudly.

‘Oh. Well, er, good for you,’ Collins said, slightly bewildered. She saw it more as cruelty than as an achievement, but Florence obviously didn’t.

"yep. I hated tennis though. Those ones hit hard. I liked the comprehensive tests better. They gave me papers with silly patterns I got to color them they'd ask me what I saw In the pictures. They weren't pictures of anything though." Florence said. He mimicked the beeping of a fire alarm.

‘I don’t like tennis either. Were they just little splotches on paper?’ Collins asked.

"yeah, they were splotches. They called them roar shacks." Florence said. He mimicked more Morse code.

‘Right,’ Collins said. ‘Erm, what else did they do to “test” things?’

Well, they had this test they said was for experiments like me, but it was more like a test for the researchers. They called it strength training and they tried to tie us to ropes and see how far we could lift the discs but it hurt my back so I didn't do it much. No matter how it got me in trouble." Florence said. He itched his arm and finished his ice cream.

‘Right. And what do you mean, “experiments like you”?’ Collins asked, frowning slightly.

"well, the others. Like the ones you saw at the lab. Marco and the rats didn't have to go but big experiments like me had to. I was only one of 5 that got to see the roar shacks and I was the only one who got a music box." Florence said proudly. He flared his wings.

Collins nodded. ‘Do you think it was because you might’ve been the creator’s favourite, or for some other reason?’

"well, I think it's because everyone said I was the friendliest. Most of the newest junior researchers would say it each time they was me. They would give me little treats because I was so friendly. One of them gave me a little chocolate bar with a softer candy inside, it was awesome." Florence said.
