Collins smiled. ‘Good. Let’s go find an empty place and eat your ice cream.’

"i love ice cream!" Florence reiterated. Jumping into the air and mimicking the horn of a freight train.

Collins laughed. ‘C’mon, before anyone sees us.’ She looked around and crossed the road, walking down an alleyway.

Florence jumped around behind Collins. "I love how cold it is when it gets hot out and I like how sweet it is when you're stuck in the cold." Florence said, referring to the ice cream

Collins blinked. ‘Oh, with the ice cream? Yeah, that’s nice,’ she said with a chuckle. ‘When did you last have some?’

"the last time was after that scary party. One of the junior researchers gave me a Popsicle and said she had to say goodbye. She seemed sad." Florence said. He mimicked a sobbing.

‘Right. And she didn’t come back?’ Collins asked, frowning slightly.

"most people didn't. I think John and the assistant researcher were the only ones to show up." Florence said, pulling at a loose feather.

‘Right. So the creator was the only thing from keeping them from leaving? Or were they too sad to come back?’ Collins wondered aloud.

"hwy, I was friends with some of them. At least I think I was. They were usually real nice to me." Florence said. He mimicked choruses of "good job" and "way to go!"

‘That’s good.’ Collins looked around before sitting down in the alleyway, leaning against the wall. ‘Well, do you know why they didn’t come back, then?’

"no. They just stopped showing up. Maybe they didn't like phase 2." Florence said, itching his wings.

‘Phase 2? What’s phase 2?’ Collins asked as she opened the box of ice cream and handed a cone to Florence.

"phase 2 were the big tests. Instead of word association I had to learn these beeps and figure out big confusing number sequences. Instead of races I had to play dodge." Florence said. He mimicked some Morse code which spelt out ice cream before taking the ice cream cone and biting directly into it.

Collins nodded slightly, ripping the packaging off her cone and licking it before responding. ‘What do you mean, “play dodge”?’
