“You don’t mind if I pick you up, do you?” Eli asked, and in response Ralph jumped into their arms.
“How’d you manage to find a world with talking cats?” Eli asked Callum, standing up slowly. “Everything about this place is awesome.” -
'I didn't exactly find it,' Callum shrugged. 'It was born here. Come, my room is upstairs.'

“Born here? Where are your parents?” Eli asked, following Callum to his room. “You can’t be much younger than me- so you’ve been stuck here for 14 years?!”

'I guess.'

“That sounds horrible! No amount of talking cats would make being stuck for that long bearable- no offense Ralph.” Eli said, realizing that Callum completely avoided the question about parents again- twice in a row.

'None taken,' the cat said cheerfully.
'It was OK. A little lonely, but fine.' -
“Alright.” Eli said, not sure if they completely believed it, mostly from personal experiences of being alone. “How’d you wind up born here with nobody here? Where are your parents?” They figured if Callum didn’t answer this time, they wouldn’t ask it again.

'I'm not sure, actually,' Callum said, and it was partially true. 'They disappeared a while ago.'

“Why would they do something like that?” Eli asked, though they knew Callum wouldn’t have the answer. They weren’t oblivious to deadbeat parents- they knew plenty about their father after all- but both of the parents leaving was simply unimaginable.

'It wasn't their fault.'

“Than who’s fault was it?” Eli asked, tilting their head slightly.

'Mine,' he said quietly, looking away.

“How on earth would it be your fault?” Eli asked, grabbing Callums shoulder with his free hand.

'It doesn't matter,' Callum said, but they weren't at him room yet so he couldn't find a distraction.

Eli didn’t want to press. “Well no matter what happened it isn’t your fault. No parent should leave their kid like that.”
