“How could they even do that?” I asked. “With the help of the police? Your brothers 19, meaning he’s legally old enough to take care of you guys. Something’s not right.”
-
Natsuki pulled out her phone with a grim expression, then typed this into the notes app: The foster agency can take away children from a household or family they think is not safe for them. They make inspections and if they see the guardian is not fit to look after the children, the agents can legally take them away.
She passed it to Nik, tears still in her eyes as she glanced back to her little sister. -
“Not safe?” I said, scoffing. “That’s stupid. Your family and your house is the safest place on earth.” I grabbed Nats hands. “We WILL get Mint and Xiao back. I promise.”
-
Natsuki nodded, still in tears. She looked down at her feet, not wanting Nik to see her cry.
-
Nikolai kneeled down, looking her in the eyes. He didn’t care if he saw her crying or not. “Hey. We’ll make this right. I swear it.” He gave her a hug.
-
Natsuki leaned into him, hugging him back. Her head leaned against his chest and she closed her eyes, willing herself to stop crying. Nevertheless, she was grateful to have someone like Nikolai to comfort her.
She wrapped her arms around his torso, taking a shaky breath. -
“Do you want to go back to my house?” I asked, worried that it was getting dark, and he didn’t want Nat to get sad again. “We can save the address so we can come back to see them.”
-
Natsuki shook her head. She wanted to find her brother before they left, but she didn't know where he could be.
The foster agency wouldn't want to allocate him a new home - he was an adult - but they wouldn't want him to go free either. -
Nikolai nodded. “We can stay a bit longer.” He said, watching her. “You want to try and find your brother, huh?”
-
Natsuki responded with a nod and wiped her eyes again, then looked around the hallway. There were a few more doors, about 2 or 3.
-
Nikolai looked through the windows of a couple, but couldn’t find Xiao. He looked at Nat, waiting to seen if she found him.
-
Natsuki looked through the window, looking around for Xiao. He wasn't in there, only a few more children. Nat turned back to Nik, growing desperate.
-
Nik shook his head. “Should we try another floor?” He asked, knowing that Natsuki would most likely say yes.
-
Nat nodded her head and they walked into the elevator. Natsuki chose floor 3 and the elevator took them up.
-
The elevator doors opened, and they both went out, looking at the windows of each door, Nikolai taking the left side. He couldn’t find Xiao yet.
