Natsuki steered her bike out of the rack, and started following the car. Not too close so that they'd be seen, but close enough so that they'd be able to see it.
There was a lot of traffic, so Nat and Nik could keep up with the car on the path next to it. -
Surprisingly it wasn’t that hard to follow the car, since the women wasn’t paying attention to them, and they didn’t need to bike as fast as Nikolai thought they would.
-
After a while, they got to the outskirts of town. It was clear the foster care agency building wasn't in their small country town, but Nat worried about how longer they would have to go. Nik did, after all, have a family to go back to. They would surely wonder where he was.
-
They kept biking until finally, she woman stopped at a business center, that must’ve been the foster home.
-
They waited till the woman parked her car and disappeared until the building, before Natsuki biked a little closer and leaned her stolen bike against a tree, looking up at the building.
-
Nikolai parked his bike by Nats. “You ready?” He asked her, holding his hand out to the door handle.
-
Natsuki gave a small nod, chewing on her bottom lip nervously.
-
“Alright, let’s go.” Nikolai said, taking a deep breath and opening the door. “Follow me.”
-
Natsuki followed him into the lobby, where there was a receptionist tapping away to her keyboard. A few couches were set up, and there was a room behind the reception desk and an elevator on the side.
-
Nikolai went to the elevator, Nat following him.
“What button should we press?” He asked. -
Natsuki glanced down at the buttons. She pressed the "close elevator door" for a start. There were 5 floors, but there were no labels.
Natsuki pressed floor 2 and it lit up, then the elevator started taking them up. -
The elevator doors opened up, and they walked around, trying to find out if Nats family was in one of the doors.
-
Natsuki stepped outside, peering into one of the windows in the doors. Inside were a few little children, none of them could've been older than 7, playing in a bright-coloured room. In the corner was a little girl crying into her hands, and Natsuki recognised the pink butterfly hairclip in her hair.
Natsuki turned back to Nikolai as her eyes glassed over, and gestured to the door. -
Nikolai looked through the window, and his heart wrenched when he saw the girl crying.
“That’s Ming?” He asked, remembering how bubbly and happy Ming was when he saw her. -
Natsuki nodded, wiping her own eyes furiously. She was tempted to go straight in there, pick up her sister and carry her out of there, but she would surely be noticed by the adults.
