Lily stirred in her sleep dreaming about what had happened in the factory. The way the man slapped her, half drowned her when her hands were lousy, it made her tremor in her sleep.

Anne's father, Harold, looked up from his paperwork at her. His old age made him frail, so he couldn't walk around without a cane. He had small glasses that balanced on the tip of his nose and a small going in his eyes. People said it was because he was insane, but Anne knew it was because he was always squinting and working in the dark.
'You wanted to see me, father?' Anne asked, shifting her weight from foot to foot uncomfortably. -
Lily woke up freezing cold and wet. Wet? It was raining. She shivered leaning against the wall to stand up and trekked forwards. She didn't know where she was going but she needed somewhere warm. Somewhere safe.
-
'Yes,' he said, not looking up from his papers. His voice was deep and masculine, with a heavy British accent.
After a pause, Anne asked, 'What about?'
'The shop,' her father replied, eyes glued to his paperwork.
After another long and awkward pause, Anne cleared her throat, wondering if her father was growing absent-minded. When he didn't reply, she asked again, 'What about it?' -
After a few minutes, Lily found herself at the bakery. She sighed, and forced open the door. She sat down beside the counter and felt instantly warmer.

Anne's dad finally looked up, but not in interest for the conversation he was having with his daughter. 'The bell in the bakery just tinkled,' he said. 'Go check if anyone is in there, will you?'
'Uh.. yeah...' she stuttered, turning to leave. What a strange conversation. Anne supposed her father was indeed going mad. -
Lily jumped as she heard the stairs creaking. She crouched down, knees tucked into her chest, squashing herself against the counter. She held her breath not daring to make a sound.
-
'Anyone in here?' she asked the empty room, looking around. She knew it was wrong to think of her own father as insane, but he really was losing it.
-
Lily put her hand over her mouth to stop herself calling out when she heard a familiar voice. With a sudden realisation hit her. It was Anne. She knew the girl was quite kind on her own but her Father would surely tell the police do she kept quiet.
-
Anne frowned. It was unlike her father to be so strange, and he did have a reputation for good hearing. But, as Anne had learnt the hard way, reputation does not define one's personality. She walked around the counter, to the front of the bakery, and turned around.
'Aha!' she exclaimed, noticing a curled up, messy-looking child behind her.
