Lily stared blankly at the girl Infront of her holding out a loaf of bread. She reached out an arm and quickly grabbed the bread, clutching it too her chest like she was afraid she would change her mind. "Thanks" she stated biting into the bread before putting it in her pocket.
-
'You're welcome,' Anne said, smiling. She heard the tinkle of a bell and glanced towards the door. A tall man wearing a suit and a top hat stepped inside. He had a cane but didn't look like he needed it.
-
Lily looked up and swallowed a scream. She legged it ducking underneath the man's legs.
-
Anne pursed her lips in confusion, then looked up at the man.
'Good morning, sir!' she said brightly. 'What do you need?'
The man didn't answer her question, only looked her up and down and smiled. 'What a fine young lady you are. Gloves, dress, neat hair...' he trailed off.
'Thank you, I suppose?' she said, quite confused. She was about to repeat her question, but the man interrupted her.
'How I would love to have a girl like you as a daughter,' he said. Anne narrowed her eyes at him.
'If you're not going to buy anything, sir, I'm going to have to ask you to leave,' she said. -
Lily ran down the street not looking back, shaking in fear. Eventually she sat down against a lamp-post, catching her breath. As her breathing slowed down, she suddenly felt a twinge of guilt of what she had left the bakery-girl in for. She couldn't be sure if an adult was working there as well that day. But the way he grinned at her, a shock of deja vu had jolted through her body. A horrible man that had crossed her path a few years ago. Lily panicked rushing back towards the bakery, that girl had been kind too her she had too repay the favour, right?
-
'Of course, of course,' the man said, looking down at the case. 'Hmm...'
Anne waited for quite a while, whilst the man inspected all of the desserts and loafs of bread quite closely. Anne was about to speak up when she saw the scruffy girl run back to the door, and thought better of it. -
Lily stayed at the door until the bakery-girl came into her full view. Tears running down her cheeks she mouthed three words. 'Run away now!"
-
Anne wasn't exactly a lip-reading expert, so she had trouble figuring out what the scruffy girl was trying to tell her. She turned back to the man, who had decided to order a pastry.
Anne took it out of the case and put it in a paper bag, then handed it to the man. 'Here you go, sir,' she said, handing it to him over the counter. 'That'll be Ā£3.' -
Lily sighed in frustration. It wasn't that hard too understand was it? Maybe it was, she didn't know how too spell-living on the street- so there was a chance it didn't look right too the bakery-girl who probably had private lessons from a Governor. Lily looked the other girl right in the eye, so her fear would transplant into hers then slowly repeated in a very low voice. "Run away now!"
-
'Thank you dear,' the man said in a sickeningly sweet voice, and held out his money to put in her hands. Something wasn't right, Anne could feel it in the pit of her stomach. She put her gloves back on and took the money, putting it in the cash register.
'Oh, and you can have this,' he said, placing a cookie on the counter. Anne narrowed her eyes at it, then looked back at the man.
'Thank you,' she said, trying to sound gleeful. 'Have a nice day!' She took a glance at the scruffy girl again, then watched the man leave. -
Lily lost her breath as the man smiled down at her. A sickly, fake smile. The one that had tempted her one too many times as a younger child. She shook violently, trying too catch her breath. The man smiled, then left the shop. Lily sighed in relief then ran too the counter, tackled the cookie of it, stood on it and put the remaining pieces in the waste-paper basket at the corner of the room. "Don't ever talk too that man again!" she hissed turning around too leave.
-
'Goodness,' Anne muttered, raising her eyebrows at the girl's outburst. 'Why not, may I ask?'
-
Lily sighed turning back around too face the girl. "You don't want too know" and when she saw the girl's expression. "You really, really don't want too know"
(What should it be lol, I don't know!) -
(Perhaps kidnapping children and forcing him to work from them, giving them little to no food, then watching them die of starvation....
Or something like that š) -
for him, not from them*)
