Lily couldn't sleep. When she heard Anne breathing softly she crept out of the bed and slowly opened the door of her room. It creaked slightly, but fortunately she didn't stir. She carefully stepped out of the room and walked down the wooden stairs.
-
Everyone in the house was asleep, so nobody heard as Lily crept through the house.
Anne stirred in her dreams, and around 5 minutes after Lily had left, she woke from a nightmare. Her breathing quickened, and she was sweating. Wiping her forehead with the back of her hand, she looked behind her but Lily wasn't there. -
Lily crept through the bakery and held her breath as she passed Anne's Nonna who was dozing in her armchair. She whipped open the front door and ran in the direction of the park.
-
Anne frowned at the empty spot next to her, and stood up. She pulled on some socks and boots and walked out the door, looking for her friend. Past her Nonna and past her parent's and sibling's rooms, then into the bakery.
-
Lily collapsed on the damp grass as soon as she arrived. It took her a few moments to catch her breath, and when she did a few tears escaped. She wiped them away furiously, then continued laying down staring at the raven black sky.
-
Anne noticed a dark figure wandering around, so she opened the unlocked bakery door and went after it, making sure to keep a safe distance away.
-
Eventually Lily stood up and wondered over to the swings. It was quite hard to see without the day-light but she just about managed to swing both legs over the wooden seat.
-
Anne noticed the figure moving around. 'Hello?' she called when she was within earshot.
-
Lily jumped at the voice, it seemed to be quite a distance away from her. She didn't even know if it was talking to her or not. She decided against replying, it was dark and this was Victorian London after all.
-
'Hello?' Anne called again, noticing the figure flinch. 'I-I'm looking for my friend. Have you seen her?'
-
Lily bit her lip. It was definitely Anne, and she was definitely looking for her. She sighed then spoke aloud. "Hello"
-
She stepped forward, recognising the voice, but couldn't quite place it. Anne squinted and noticed the figure was Lily. 'Why are you out here?' the former asked nervously.
-
Lily put her head down, staring at the floor. She shrugged unsure of what to say.
-
'Are.. you OK?' Anne asked, taking another small step forward.
-
Lily hesitated for a moment then nodded. "I'm fine" she whispered.
