Kenna slowly nodded. "But why not?" she asked.

"Good question," Ander said. "I've been sick of my work for some time now, and I finally decided to quit it. I'm taking a well earned retirement."

Kenna's stomach slowly untwisted from the knots it had been in a little bit before. "When do you think they'll find out?" she asked

"Soon," Ander said. "We don't have a lot of time."

"And when they do?" Kenna asked. "What then?"

"They'll hunt us down," Ander said. "They will stop at nothing to kill us."

"So then why don't you just kill me right now?" Kenna said. "Then only one of us has to die, and then you can tell them you're resigning, and so on." She didn't want Ander to die too.

Ander shook his head. "I'm not going to kill you. Even if I did resign, well, there's no peaceful way out of that one. Maybe I can ruin things from the inside so you can get away."

"But then they'd go after you also," Kenna said.

"Maybe," Ander said. "Or maybe I could get away. At least one of us would live."

Kenna looked at him. She had not expected any of this to happen when she woke up that morning. "I don't know..."

Ander felt helpless. He had no idea what to do, and here he was. Probably about to die no matter what happened next.

Kenna realized she was chewing on her thumbnail and stopped. She always did that when she was nervously thinking.

"Let's think of a plan inside," Ander decided. "We're too open here."

Kenna nodded. She walked over to the door and held it open for him.
