Molly stared down at her hand, the hand that had just touched a lamb prince's hand. She giggled in delight, her small tail starting to wag like a happy dog's tail. "I won't bite you. I didn't bite any other lamb, either! I only like a few types of meat, like fiiiiish. And you can find fish in most water places." The pup danced around, spinning and making hand motions in the air. "What do you eat? I heard you say you don't eat meat, so what's a lamb's diet?"
-
Basil smiled lightly, moving to sit down so he was at her level. She was so energetic and a little strange they way she moved around, but she reminded him of the little lamb girl that had made him the flower crown. He touched the top of his head with a soft sigh, wishing he'd kept it, then brought his attention back to Molly. "That's very kind of you. My people would've appreciated that. You like fish? I wonder if fish people exist... Maybe in the far away oceans." He giggled a bit at her random movements and thought about foods from home. "We eat from the land. Fruits, vegetables, we even made bread out of oats and wheats sometimes."
-
Molly frowned lightly at him when he reached up to touch his head- she didn't question him, however, and merely stopped dancing all around. "I guess you can say it's kind, but it's really only because I'm picky about the texture of the meat and such," the pup shrugged to him. "I don't think I'd eat them. My momma says they're called mermaids and mermen. They're said to be beautiful, and I bet if you had a tail, you could be one of them. You're pretty enough for their kind." She bounced up to get in front of him, then stopped and waited. "Do you think we could try some of that where we're going?"
-
Basil frowned a bit, but still was glad the girl wasn't as feral and instinctive as the other wolves. He shuddered a bit, still feeling like there were unfriendly eyes on him. He knew that someone was looking at him, no matter what, but he also knew their leader would be angry if they did anything. "Mermaids. Mermen. Sounds like your momma has traveled to many places. She knows more than my mother. But..we never had to move for anything." His cheeks turned red at the compliment, yet he was embarrassed when the pup called him pretty. "Ah..uhm..thank you, Molly." The lamb prince flinched when she jumped up, but relaxed when she was just curious about his diet. "Well, that's up to your mother. I don't want you to eat something that would make sick or anything."
-
The young she-wolf played with her dirty dress, humming as she listened to him. She liked his voice- unlike Cyrus's, that was deep and sometimes scratchy, Basil had a soothing voice that reminded her of her mother's voice. It made her think of bells, though she doubted his voice would ever be at that pitch. "We all have, but yes, my mommy has been much more places than just the pack.. She joined on her own free will because she was alone. She's been to the sea, and she likes readin' books when we stop at towns with books. Do you read? I bet we can ask her to get a book about mermaids and mermen for you!" Molly giggled happily, twirling again. "You're welcome, Basil. And alright, I'll ask her!" She darted off into the small crowd of wolves, shouting for her mother. At that time, Cyrus and his companion were trailing back to them, both looking moderately tired.
-
Basil couldn't help smiling at the young wolf, listening to all the things she had to say. She was adorable, and he'd appreciate having her around to talk to. He didn't know if the other kids would be like her, but he could hope. If he could sit, make crafts and tell stories with him, then maybe it wouldn't be so hard to live among the wolves. When they weren't trying to eat him, they were easy to be around. "I can read, yes. We had literature back home. Do you think she could get a book about the ocean for a lamb like me? That'd be nice.." Basil nodded lightly, watching her run off. But the moment he heard Cyrus return, the lamb prince stared straight at the wolf, shaking for no reason.
-
The first thing Cyrus noticed was the fact that Basil was shaking as he approached the lamb and his pack. He was curious to know why, but he was too tired to care. Yawning softly, he slowed his pace to halt in front of Basil. Looking to the pack behind the small boy, he grunted, "We've found a town not too far from here. By walking, we should only take fifteen minutes getting there. Lucas and I have checked us into a place for the night." He paused as if he were going to continue, but rather, he turned around and started walking back the way he came. The pack started to stand and follow behind, making sure to give Basil space. After a moment, Cyrus looked back at Basil and said, "Come here."
-
The lamb swallowed when the older stood in front of him, staring wide-eyed at him. He listened carefully, a bit confused about what the other was talking about, but stood with this rest of them anyway. Basil noticed that they still gave him his space, probably fearing their leader more than anything. When he was summoned to the wolf, he hurried over to keep him from getting impatient, his tail starting to sway loosely for the first time since being around the wolves, since it had been tucked between his legs that majority of the time.
-
Cyrus grabbed Basil's arm and tugged him away from the pack. When they were out of earshot of the others, the older wolf pulled him in front and looked him down from head to toe. "None of them hurt you, right? Did anyone entertain you while we were gone? I'll punish them if they did." He released the other, crossing his arms. He shivered in the cool air- the afternoon air was his least favorite, because it reminded him that there was still sunlight for another few hours. The alpha was momentairly distracted by Basil's swishing tail, his eyes following it like they did when Cyrus started at a grandfather clock. "Well?" he said, staring now into Basil's eyes. "Any names of either a troublemaker or someone who treated you kindly?"
-
Basil made a small, lamb noise of distress when the other pulled him aside. He didn't know what was going on, but he was afraid of what the other intended to do to him. Until Cyrus began to question him about if the others had brought him harm. The lamb shook his head lightly in response, not liking the way the other stared at him. "No, no one hurt me. They stayed away.." Basil noticed Cyrus's shaking and was tempted to reach out to him, but decided against it, not sure if the response he'd get would be positive or negative. He flinched at the word 'kindly'. He stared wide-eyed at the other, worried that he might hurt an innocent child. "Why would it be a problem if someone was nice to me? You've pulled me into this..pack to live among you, right? So what would kindness from another matter?"
-
"I never said it would be a problem. I was only curious. My pack isn't known for talking to people their first time, but I was wondering if the same went for you.. You aren't like most people. Oh, that's a compliment, by the way," Cyrus added the last sentence as an after thought. "We like meeting new, different people. Even if we almost ate your spieces. I'd apologize, but as I've mentioned, survival of the fittest." He shrugged, starting to play with the hem of his shirt. "I can ask you something else if you desire. I just need something to talk about with you. I want to get to hear your voice, become familiar with it. Err.." The wolf blushed. "Not to make you uncomfortable or anything. I just need to be able to recognize you in case of an emergency."
-
"Well, you sure were acting like it was. Don't scare me like that. I..I thought you were gonna hurt someone just for being nice to me." Basil averted his eyes, blushing lightly as he was unsure of the comment. How was he different from anyone else? He was also sick of hearing that 'survival of the fittest' phrase. It irritated him because of the way he was. Lambs simply aren't that strong against wolves. He began to squirm a bit, feeling awkward being alone with the alpha, but perked up when Cyrus said he wanted to hear his voice. Basil looked up at him, his own cheeks showing color. "I-I think I get what you're saying. But you don't need to know my voice for that. I am..the only sheep here, so just listen for my distress noises if I'm in trouble..."
-
Cyrus snorted, shaking his head as he glanced down at the ground. He could see his feet prints there. "My bad. I don't think I'm so cruel as to harm someone for being nice to you. I suppose we can say that I want to make sure that there will be someone for you when I need to scout ahead as I've done before. Oh, what was the word.. A friend. Besides me, of course," he looked up and gave him a look as if to challenge the lamb to say otherwise. He discarded that gaze when he noticed that Basil was looking uncomfortable. In fact, the wolf looked away once more, though he was watching from the corner of his eye to watch for other types of reactions. "Distress noises all sound the same to me. It's shrieking and wailing for the majority of species."
-
"A friend. Well, I don't how much a little girl can do, but I'd call her a friend. Someone to break silence and keep the day interesting." Basil glanced at Cyrus, watching the wolf carefully. He knew the pack had likely gone ahead, but still figured they should get moving themselves. There was still daylight, and the lamb wanted to find a place to bathe. He couldn't help smiling at the idea that the wolf would confuse his distress for another. "Lambs are unique then. We make a sort of 'baa' or long 'meh' sound. I'd do it right now, but I'm not really fearing for my life anymore.."
-
"One of the pups came over to you?" Cyrus looked mildly surprised, though he didn't sound as such. "Well, it's good to know you've made a friend." Secretly, the alpha was relieved that an older wolf- female or male- hadn't approached Basil. The possessive feeling he felt when he looked at Basil for too long had been gnawing at him the whole time he was gone. He had thought about the lamb the whole time, and how he'd shred anyone who tried to touch him to pieces if he found out. He wasn't one for sharing. But a pup, he thought, he could share with a pup. No harm done there. "Hopefully you won't fear for your life any time soon, hm?"
