Philip gave her a quick kiss on the head before joining the men in the kitchen where there was a circular table for them to join. They began discussing where they should go next.
-
Janette quickly made her way over to the side of the ship, staring at the churning dark water, that seemed to be calling her name. Of course, Philip had said he would teach her, but never had really gotten the chance. Right now, she was wondering if drowning would be all that painful of a way to go.
Everything she knew about it said yes, but still, she couldn't help lifting a leg over the banister, and then the other, staring at the deck of the ship before pushing back, falling freely. -
A sudden noticeable splash caught his attention. "Did you all here that?" Some nodded along with a chorus of "Mhm's." Philip pushed past the group of men, on to the deck, and looked over one side. Nothing. The other had a figure that looked like.. No, it couldn't be.
-
Just like the first time, she was aware of the water closing over her, surrounding her, wrapping her in a cold embrace. The shadow of the ship passed overhead as she sunk farther and farther down, and then it faded completely as the world slipped from her view, as salty water filled her lungs.
-
As soon as he realized who it was he tossed off his boots in a matter of seconds and dived in. The water was freezing, but nothing he hadn't experienced before. Philip pushed his legs trying to catch up to her. Once he was within inches of her, he grabbed her arms yanking her up so that he could hold her waist. He wouldn't loose her today, he couldn't loose her. His lungs ached, asking for fresh air as he swam against a current.
-
Janette was too far away that even Philip's touch didn't seem really. Perhaps it was the fact that, this time, she didn't bother to try to word of the darkness that pulled her closer, and closer, inviting her into a silent rest, one that would let her forget. And, oh god, how she wanted to forget.
-
A figure dived in, most likely Eric, and swam to him in a matter of moments and helped Philip get Janette to the surface. Philip gasped deeply, inhaling air. "Janette!" He shouted. Eric wore a worried expression, treading not too far from them. "Oh, Janette, why would you do this too me?"
-
She didn't respond, but, sure enough, Janette had heard him. His voice seemed far away, and not real. But, it seemed the pierce something inside her, some little part of her that still wanted. Wanted to live, wanted to stay with Philip.
And, suddenly, that little piece of her started fighting desperately, struggling to get the water out of her lungs, trying to open her eyes. She couldn't, though, and the realization washed over her- She was going to die. -
The crew started to shout something, but Philip couldn't take his eyes off of Janette. His beloved Janette. Something hit his shoulder, curtly pulling him away from his daze. "The rope, Philip! Take the damn rope!" They shouted together. Philip grabbed it briskly, fumbling from shock. The rope was knotted so that he could climb it, but with another body? That would be a challenge.
-
Finally, something snapped, and she was coughing up gallons of water- Enough for her to inhale, anyways, and then cough up more. Her eyes opened, but they stung of salt, so she closed them, clinging tightly to Philip, refusing to let go.
-
As light as she was, he would still need some way to get up. He took a moment to along the ship, then to her. "Janette, I need you to help me here. I just need you to hold on to me. I'm going to have you hanging over my shoulder at about your stomach. I just need you to hold on as I climb up the ship. Can you do that?"
-
She nodded, weakly, and wrapped her arms around his torso, closing her eyes. Her head hurt, extremely bad, and she feared that she would pass out again.
-
He stuck one foot in a crease in the wood, his hands grasping the old rope that had only been used a couple of times. "Janette, tell me anytime if you think you'll let go." He said, grabbing at another knot.
-
Janette mumbled some kind of response, but truthfully, her mouth was numb, and her tongue felt swollen. It was unlikely that she'd be able to say anything at all.
-
She felt burning against his body; not that the wet shirts between them did much. He stopped about halfway to adjust her so that she less likely to fall, and continued. Above them, crew member scrambled around the ship getting towels and blanket, Matilda preparing broth for her to drink.
