She had been right- Just as they cleared the edge of the ship, the world spun again, and she drifted into darkness, though it was more like sleep this time. Janette felt numb, like her whole body was wrapped in layers of clothing, and she couldn't feel anything but blunt pressure through it.
-
Once he had gotten them over and into the ship, he set her down, then picked her up bride style and rushed her to the kitchen for cool water. "Matilda I need a cool bath for Janette." She nodded, setting the broth aside, and began filling the tub. "Janette, wake up, please." He held her firmly, but not too tight.
-
Janette heard him, but couldn't manage to snap out of her sleeping state. She tried to move, but could only manage to take in a deep, painful breath.
-
"I've fini-" Matilda began, but Philip pushed pass her and closed the door to the small room. He set her in the tub, not bothering to take off her clothes. He set a hand to her forehead that burned. The nearest Island wasn't for miles, so they wouldn't be able to get to a doctor. "Janette, why?"
-
Finally, couching up yet more water, Janette was able to open her eyes, and move the rest of her body. Slowly, and shaking, she raised a hand and pressed it to Philip's cheek, smiling faintly at him.
-
He closed his eyes, putting his hand around hers, and closed his eyes. "Janette, I can't imagine why you would do this. Especially to me." He opened his dark blue eyes and looked at her. They had always been the color of the sea during a storm, a trait he inherited from his mother.
-
"..I.. I fell," She lied, pulling his hand down to hold against her own cheek. "I'm sorry. I wasn't.. Wasn't being careful."
-
He knelt by her and frowned. "I know what it is to make mistake twice, Janette. And I also know you wouldn't have done it."
-
"Fine," She sighed, closing her eyes. "I jumped. I'm sorry, Philip, I wasn't.. I just.. I'm sorry."
-
Philip looked away for a moment thinking about what he would say next. "As soon as you get better, I'll teach you how to swim. In the meantime, you can't go on deck with out somebody watching you, but I'd rather you stay in my room."
-
"..Y-You can't do that! I am not your prisoner, Philip. You can't confine me in the walls of your room. You can't do that," She pleaded, but knew it was no good. She had lost his trust in her ability to be stable.
-
"I'm trying to help you. I also said you could go out, just with someone to watch on you." He ran his fingers through the cool water, a couple brushed her leg. "I couldn't bear to loose you." He said softly.
-
"I don't need your help, or a babysitter." She pulled away from his touch. "I'm not your property. You have no right to order me about."
-
"You'd be right if you would stop trying to jump into the sea all the time. Maybe next time I should let you drown since you don't need 'help' or a 'babysitter'." He got up and dusted his wet pants off.
-
"I wish you would have," She snapped, and then, with a pang of guilt, realized she meant it. Truly, truly did. After all, she had jumped, wanting to drown.
