Antonio frowned when Lovino spoke in such a tiny voice. He laid down beside him, facing him, trying to delicately move Lovino's head up so he could look at him. "What's wrong, amorcito?"
-
Lovino allowed Antonio to tilt his head up, deciding that protesting would just make things worse. "Just hurts a tiny bit, I'll be-" Of course, at the worst possible moment, the Italian was interrupted by a series of rough coughs, making his throat sting and his chest constrict painfully. He whimpered, then immediately shut his mouth, hoping Antonio hadn't heard. "I'm fine," he whispered.
-
Antonio frowned a little while he coughed, letting him finish before he said anything. "I can get you something to soothe your throat if it's bothering you. I'm not sure if there's anything for your lungs.."
-
"Water, please," he whispered, blinking more tears back. The tightness in his chest and throbbing ache of his lungs were making him anxious again, but he squeezed his eyes shut, reminding himself that Antonio didn't want to hear his pain.
-
"Of course, no problem." He got up, going towards Lovino's dresser again, looking for a canteen or anything. "Do you have any water in here?"
-
"Behind soap," he informed softly, not bothering to open his eyes. He curled tighter, hoping to ease some of the pain in his chest.
-
Antonio nodded, successfully findig the water. He took it back to the bed, sitting down. "Here, have a drink."
-
Lovino reached blindly for the canteen, biting his lip to keep from breaking down again. He raised the canteen to his mouth and took a small sip, the water soothing his throat but making his lungs burn, perhaps recalling what damage the liquid had done earlier. Lovino winced, biting down on his lip so hard he tasted blood.
-
Antonio took the canteen back as soon as he saw that it wasn't helping. He closed it, and set it aside, looking at Lovino with worry. "Did that not help? Don't bite your lip so hard, amor, you're bleeding. I'm sorry, I know it hurts."
-
Lovino hiccuped softly, wiping frantically at the tears in his eyes. "S-Sorry," he managed. "I d-don't mean to be s-such a burden," he mumbled. The nightmares, his father, the sickness, the near-drowning, it always ended with Lovino in tears and Antonio left to comfort him. "I'm so, so sorry," he whispered, trembling with withheld sobs.
-
Antonio laid down next to him again, pursing his lips in concern. He scooted close, kissing his forehead. "You're not a burden, don't be sorry." He hugged an arm around him, hoping he wouldn't mind. "I love you, so you'll never be a burden."
-
"I-I don't understand, my own family d-didn't want me, why you? After- After everything I've ruined for you, w-why do you stay?" he asked, tears dripping down his cheeks. He clung to the arm around him, terrified that Antonio would agree and walk out.
-
Antonio held Lovino firmly as soon as the Italian clung to the comfort. "I don't know why they wouldn't want you. You haven't ruined anything for me at all, you've even given me a plan for the future. You make me so happy, why would I leave?"
-
Lovino threw his arms around Antonio's neck and hugged him tightly. "B-Because I wake you up every night and cry all the time and I can't even give Maira a f---ing b-bath without messing up and I always call you names even though I don't think you're an idiot or a b------ or stupid I love you and I-I think you're amazing...but I'm just me, I'm n-needy and ugly and helpless and so much less than you deserve..." he ended in a hoarse whisper, his throat stinging again in protest of all the talking.
-
Antonio shook his head slowly, not thinking any of it to be much of a big deal. "It's fince, amorcito, I don't mind. You're not needy and ugly or helpless you're just being human. There's nothing needy or ugly or helpless about that."
