Antonio sat cross-legged on top of the sheets, shaking his hair out to make it a little neater. "I'll leave first and then you, okay? That way I can get out before it gets too busy around here."
-
Lovino nodded. "Okay, I'll be out a few minutes after, then." He gave him a shy smile, silently thanking him for keeping him together through the night.
The crowd outside was a decent size now, various acts from the entire circus gathered to punish the disturbing couple when they emerged. There was a hanging post close by, in the center of the town. It would be perfect. -
Antonio stood from the bed, walking over to Lovino to hug him, and kiss his forehead. "I love you, come visit me first, please." He stepped away, opening the door, and stepping out quickly. He was planning on making a hasty rush away, so without even thinking he shut the door and made a move to hurry away, but instead ended up face-to-face with every person from the circus.
-
Lovino kissed him quickly, smiling. "I will," he promised, watching him exit and sighing softly as the door closed, already feeling a bit lonely.
The head dancer sneered at him. "Did you really think you could hide from us?" she asked, laughing cruelly as two men moved to grab Antonio's arms and two more moved to enter Lovino's carriage. -
Antonio was left a bit frozen in shock, Lovino's last kiss still lingering on his lips as he was grabbed. "N-no, no, you don't-- you're getting this wrong," he stuttered, knees going a bit weak.
-
The woman chuckled, but her gaze was cold and hard. "Sleeping together, you have no excuse for that, do you?" she asked false-sweetly, laughing again as the men dragged him to the center of the crowd. Many were yelling and jeering at him. "Disgusting!" "f-----!" "Filthy!"
Lovino jumped a little at the harsh knock on his door. He groaned, rising to open it just a crack. "What the f--- do you- hey!" he yelped as large hands closed around him, pulling him roughly out into the center of a screaming crowd. "You both deserve to die, but not before you're punished!" The men shoved Lovino to the ground, and before he could react, a swift kick hit his ribs, making him gasp. "N-No, wait!" he cried, eyes filling with tears as he watched Antonio, held back by both arms, have another man approach him, punching him square in the chest. -
Antonio was terrified, his eyes searching for anyone who looked even remotely sympathetic. He he was more focused on where he was being dragged to, towards some people who looked especially disgusted with him. He heard Lovino behind him, and his heart broke, thinking that it was his fault for leaving the curtains open. After all, Lovino had been to ill the night before to do it for himself. "He was just sick--" he tried to say, but was hit before he could finish. He coughed, stumbling backwards a little, but the people holding his arms held him up.
-
Lovino cried out, curling up on the ground where he'd been shoved. The screaming made his heart pound, but the Italian let out quite a few of his own noises as he was kicked repeatedly. "N-No! f---, please stop! H-He's innocent!" Lovino tried to yell, but the crowd drowned him out. He caught a glimpse of Antonio, being tugged at and shoved and punched, over and over. His attention was quickly diverted when he was pulled roughly to his feet and slammed back against the side of the carriage. A hand closed around his throat, still weak from the river, and squeezed tightly. Lovino panicked, clawing at the hand, trying desperately to take a breath as he was choked.
-
Antonio could taste blood in his mouth from his bleeding lip. He was trying to stay standing, to hold onto that bit of his dignity, but it was getting harder and harder every time someone hit him. It was difficult to dodge anything, since he was being held in place, but he at least had the freedom to turn his head and look around. When he saw Lovino pinned against the side of the carriage, he tried to pull his arms away, and shouted. "Bella, Bella please help!" No matter the indecency of these brutes, no one would dare lay a finger on a woman, or they'd end up hanging as well.
-
"Stop!" A voice rang out from the crowd, and screaming slowed to a stop as people turned to see who it was. Sure enough, Bella stood there, tears in her eyes. "Why are you hurting them? What have they done to you?!" Though many people still looked angry, about a third of the crowd started to shrink back, looking slighty guilty. Lovino fell to the ground behind her, finally managing to kick the man choking him away. He was immediately pulled up again and slapped roughly, emitting a pained cry from the Italian. That seemed to set the mob off again, but just as someone raised their fist at Antonio again, Bella jumped in the way, halting everything for a second time. "Don't hurt him!" she shouted angrily. "You know, I was asked to keep this a secret, but now is the best time for you all to know...Lovino is moving the circus to America. Permanently." The crowd murmured amongst itself, a few still glaring at the two. Bella hesitated before continuing. "Lovino and Antonio can get married in America. They're going soon, and me and many of the other dancers will follow them. Please, if there are any decent human beings left in this mob, then join us." The head dancer looked appalled by that news, but the other dancers in the crowd smiled proudly.
-
Antonio sucked his lip into his mouth, letting Bella do the talking. He set his tongue against the split, bleeding part of his lip, trying to stop the blood a bit, and looked back at Lovino. He pulled his arms away from the man holding him, and though his leg and chest were in pain from being punched and kicked, he pushed his way towards Lovino, trying to get the Italian out of the way of any more danger.
-
Lovino's cheek was slightly discolored from being hit, and finger-shaped bruises hugged his throat. His ribs and stomach ached from the kicking, but none of his pain seemed to register when he saw Antonio pushing his way towards him. "Tomorrow." Bella said, deciding that the couple would want to leave as soon as possible. "Anyone who's following needs to be ready tomorrow at sunrise. The rest of you..." she shook her head. "Hurting someone won't solve anything. Please remember that." Lovino tugged himself away from the men holding him back, stumbling into Antonio's chest. "Oh g-god," he choked, so relieved to see that Antonio wasn't seriously injured.
-
Antonio's chest was still aching, but he let Lovino press against it. They both needed the comforting touch, even though it was slightly painful. He wanted to lean down to kiss his hair, but his lip was still bleeding and didn't want any of it to get on Lovino. Before anyone could hurt them again, he pulled Lovino back towards the cabin, swinging the door open and slamming it shut behind them.
-
Lovino was mess by the time they reached the carriage. He could vaguely hear Bella explaining things outside, but that wasn't what was upsetting him. It was watching Antonio try to hide his pain, even though he was bleeding and probably bruised under his clothing. He sobbed quietly, wanting nothing more than to hold him close, but knowing it would only make things worse. He hugged his arms around himself, stumbling back until he hit the wall opposite Antonio, stammering apologies.
-
Antonio blinked when Lovino suddenly pulled away from him, not understanding why he would move away like that. He thought maybe it was because he'd hurt Lovino by pulling them both back in so suddenly, so he swallowed. "Why are you apologizing, Lovino?" It hurt a little bit to speak, from the brusies on his chest, but he managed. "You didn't do anything wrong.."
