"Come on, Christian, cheer up!" He called from the kitchen, starting to dig around for ingredients. "Waffles or pancakes?" He started to mix the batter, listening to the sound of card shuffling in the next room over.
-
The veteran sighed out a huff of smoke, temporarily blinding him from the cards. After a second, he answered. "Pancakes."
-
Joey nodded and poured the batter into the heated pan, listening to the crisp sizzle as the smell of cooking pancakes quickly filled the kitchen, momentarily overpowering all the musty smoke. Soon enough, the blonde emerged with a plate of steaming pancakes, a bottle of syrup, and a pack of cigarettes; the brand he knew Christian liked. He didn't approve of his smoking habit, but it seemed one of the only things that kept him content, so Joey didn't question it.
-
By the time the doctor arrived with the breakfast, Cristian had finished his card game, abd stacked each card into a pile on the corner of the table. Next to the stack was a silver ashtray, where he'd just rubbed out his last cigarrette. So the table in front of him was cleared, as was the air, somewhat.
-
"You really should quit smoking," He chided Christian lightly, setting down the food. "But, uh, here." He set down the package of cigarettes a bit sheepishly, seeing as how it completely contradicted his wishes for the vet to shake off the unhealthy habit. "I figured you'd need some more by now, and I know you like this brand.."
-
The vet shrugged, glanced at the food, then at the pack. It probably wasn't the most polite thing to grab firt, considering the doctor had just made him a meal, but Cristian reached out to open the pack. He pulled out one of the cigarrettes, twirling it in the fingers of one hand while he picked up a fork with his other hand. "Well, thanks," he mumbled, slicing off a piece of a pancake.
-
Joey reached out and snatched the cig from his hand. "Come on, at least eat first! You can smoke after." He said with an exasperated grin, sitting down across from him. "Anyway, how are you this morning, hm?"
-
While he did sigh a bit in exasperation, he didn't bother to ask for it back, and just continued cutting the pancakes. "Just fine. I got up a bit early."
-
Joey nodded, giving a slight sigh. "I wish there was a day when you'd day 'good' rather than 'fine'. Isn't there something you'd rather be doing than playing cards all day?" The young doctor had a habit of worrying about Christian's happiness just as much as his health.
-
"'Good' is an adjective that I will use when something good actually happens." He'd gotten the pancakes sliced up into sizable pieces, so he nabbed the syrup and poured a heap on. "I'd like to go take a jog down the road," he muttered, stabbing a pancake with his fork and eating it.
-
Joey frowned slightly, feeling a pang of pity for the other man. He watched as Christian aggressively impaled a piece of his breakfast. "Well, is there anything else you like to do?" He asked, determined to make him smile.
-
Cristian chewed on the pancake a bit longer than necessary. He kept his eyes locked on the ashtray, as he swallowed dryly. "Not really. But you're not my therapist."
-
"I know, but I hate seeing you always so bored with life. I wish I could make you happier." He explained. However, he was at a loss on how to do that. All the man wanted was to take a run- and that was the only thing Joey couldn't do for him. He imagined riding down the street in a wheelchair wouldn't be the same.
-
"Well, I'm just fine with staying at home playing cards all day. There's nothing else I want to do so there's no point in pestering me about it." Out of habit, he reached into his pocket, getting out his lighter. Since Joey hadn't taken the entire pack of cigarettes, he picked that up and pulled one of the smooth rolls out, lighting it and sticking it between his lips.
-
Joey sighed. "This isn't healthy though. You should get out more." He said, still frowning slightly. Although Christian probably only thought of him as a pain, Joey considered him a friend, and he hated seeing him so...lifeless. "We could go out for dinner tonight," He offered. He didn't usually spend time with any of the veterans outside their own homes, but he really did want to help Christian. "You could smoke outside for once.."
