Lucas ran down the hall until he saw one of the younger nurses trying to battle one of the stronger vampires. He let out a growl, stomping right over. It was too late, though, because as soon as he reached them, the vampire had gotten to her neck and had drained her of all existing blood. The vampire dropped her boy, licking his lips. Once he caught sight of Lucas, he let out a low hiss. "Aren't you the one who always comes in looking so f---ing happy? Let me wipe that smile off of your face!" The vampire lunged for Lucas, unaware of Jenny.
-
wait
*unaware of Jenny's presence -
She reached them just in time, lunging for her nurse's attacker. Jenny knocked him to the ground and the two fought until she eventually gained control, forcing him down beneath her. "Try to touch him again, and I won't hesitate to rip your throat out." She stood, kicked the vampire one last time, then turned to Lucas, grabbing his arm and pulling him away to find somewhere safer.
-
Lucas let himself get pulled away, his eyes wide in terror. He hadn't been exposed to this much bloodshed before. As she lead him towards her desired destination, he watched other nurses struggle. One by one, they were slowly loosing. He winced as he almost slipped over some spilled blood. He hadn't realized that this was the true nature of vampires. No wonder everyone had looked at him in disgust. He looked up at her, wondering why she hadn't killed him like the other vampire had attempted to.
-
She pulled him into one of the storage closets, then meticulously examined him for injuries. "You weren't bitten?" she peeked out of the closet, wondering if there was anything she could do. Noting that there was, she slid out and shut the door, leaving him in the dark.
-
Before Lucas could speak for himself, Jenny had already checked him over and left the closet. He debated on leaving the closet, but he knew that his life depended on him listening to her. He owed it all to Jenny for him for still being alive. That vampire could have killed me.. He sat onto the floor, staring at the blackness that surrounded him.
-
She came back a few minutes later, her laboratory-assigned clothes bloodied. This time, she didn't bother to close to closet, and instead stood in the doorway staring at her nurse. "You weren't bitten, right?" she asked again.
-
"No, Jenny, I wasn't. And even if I was..." Lucas trailed off as he realized there wasn't anything good that would happen. Had he been bitten, he could have transformed, or been killed on the spot. Honestly, he wasn't sure which- they hadn't ever tested to find that out. The raven haired male stared at her, his normally sparkling blue eyes dulled down. "Why are you helping me?"
-
"Well, you helped me." She stated it plainly, as if it were an obvious answer the two had shared for years. She helped him to his feet. "Do you know how to help those who were attacked? I mean, it takes about a week to transform, but I doubt anyone would be okay with nursing them until they could survive on their own."
-
"..I guess I did." It was true. She was completely and utterly right. Lucas had been there for her as much as possible. He had cared for her and shared one sided conversations with her. I meant to ask why have you not killed me yet.. But that answer will have to wait, I guess. "Unfortunately, no.. I've only dealt with- No, not dealt with. Excuse the language. I've only worked with vampires around your age. I've never been near someone who's been attacked. Never a fledgling, I guess I should put it. I wouldn't know what to do."
-
"There has to be something," She bit her lip, staring out at the room. Jenny walked out and searched a nurse that appeared to be her size, then took her ID and her shoes.
-
"If there is, I wouldn't know it. I'm sorry, Jenny.." He stopped speaking when he watched her walk out. He didn't follow her. What was he supposed to do? He wasn't sure he wanted to know.
-
"Where are the employee lockers?" she asked. "Wait, never mind, I can smell them..." She headed for one of the doors out into a hallway, then turned and looked at him expectantly.
-
Lucas took her stare as a signal for him to follow. Hesitantly, he started to follow her, shivering as he stepped back into the light. There was an emergency light shining through the halls, blinking red. But it didn't mean anything to him now. Most of them were dead while others were likely to turn. He couldn't see another vampire in sight. "Jenny, where'd the others go?"
-
"Out," she responded, already headed down the hallway. She started to skip a little, favoring fresh freedom, but stopped when she remembered the situation. She stopped at a door and held the shoes under her arm as she opened the door. The locker area was vacant and bathed in the red emergency light, creating an eerie atmosphere she chose to ignore.
